Age has given me a bit of a phobia about unguarded or badly guarded mountain roads. Didn't bother me in the past but I'm now conscious that a front wheel puncture (or whatever) could have me plunging to an ugly death.
I'm told by locals that guard rails can't be too comprehensive as the snow ploughs need the snow to go over the top of them. Doesn't make much sense to me as they close the passes anyway when the snow gets too bad.
I got caught out one time when I decided to use the Gotthard Pass instead of the tunnel. It's well guarded for most of the way but suddenly the armco stops and is replaced by stone blocks several meters apart. It's probably only for about a kilometer, but why?
Tragic about the lads; I'm sure they were well aware of the risks, but it's horrible for their families.

A few years ago we were driving down from Switzerland to the south of France. Had planned to take the San Bernadino pass all the way but the sheer drops off the side unnerved me so much when the tunnel appeared I decided that discretion was the better part of valour and said fk it, lets take the tunnel.I'm told by locals that guard rails can't be too comprehensive as the snow ploughs need the snow to go over the top of them. Oddly enough there's a good driving road in California (SR-74) that goes from the San Bernadino national forest down to Palm Springs, which comes down the side of the mountain with a long drop off the edge there too. Didn't mind that one too much but I was almost 10 years younger (and therefore somewhat more invincible).

This is the build thread of the Seat Cupra that crashed, appears it was agressively mapped and struggling with traction

How is this worthy of reporting on the TV News ?
Young men die in car crash - this isn't new - it happens everyday, it's usually a tree or another vehicle rather than a long drop but the outcome is the same.
I think it's the way in which the crash happened and the 1000ft plummet. Young men die in car crash - this isn't new - it happens everyday, it's usually a tree or another vehicle rather than a long drop but the outcome is the same.

That video isn't doing him any favours.
It isn't. However, it is fairly obvious he was a decent sort overall, not some kind of thug, he just couldn't quite control his right foot, which has ended up being his undoing at such an early age.
I'm so glad that, despite my car enthusiasm, I'm able to keep any right foot urges under control.

Grow up you pair of tools.
i've done the whole modified car thing twice over, "thousands spent" etc etc i was driving my modified Rev3 Mr2 Turbo on the motorway in the rain when i came up on 2 artics side by side doing the slow overtake battle, switched out to the third lane and boosted past them......straight into a patch of standing water.....felt the rear end lift......started to aquaplane to the right.....caught it.....pendulum effect of mid mounted engine.....spun to the left.......locked sterring hard over to counter......still aquaplaning.....now facing the 2 artics sliding backwards.....life flashing before my eyes ..... oh well this is how it ends.......
slid backwards into the hard shoulder......pumping the brakes furiously........came to rest about 2cm from the crash barrier......car covered in grass and mud......artics blasted past tooting thier horns.......checked myself to see if i was still alive..
Car stalled.....Now facing the wrong way down the motorway.......oncoming cars flashing me.....try to do a U-turn on the hard shoulder impossible.....sat there for ages waiting for a clear gap to U-turn it across 2 lanes.
My modified days were over after that promptly sold it on and bought a tank like VW passat.
As someone said previously we are all mortal.
(i now have a 2005 Ep3 Type R & resisting the modifying urge, if i spend i spend on genuine Honda service items and renew bushes and suspension components as a priority as well as tyres and pads)

Always makes me terribly upset when I see a forum full of someone excitedly posting about something they are going to do, only for them to lose their life while doing it. All that build up, the looking forward to it, the excitement, and then......
Didn't seem like he was any sort of reckless driver from reading many of his posts on that side...quite the opposite. Seemed comfortable driving all across Europe at a young age so probably a decent driver by all accounts (I know a lot of people who would be terrified of taking their car abroad and driving on the "wrong" side).
These lads were around my age.....so awful.

How was the incident caused by the car being modified ?slid backwards into the hard shoulder......pumping the brakes furiously........came to rest about 2cm from the crash barrier......car covered in grass and mud......artics blasted past tooting thier horns.......checked myself to see if i was still alive..

I've driven modified cars for 20+years everything from V8 Hi Lux with 32" tyres to 440bhp RX7s - I've never crashed.
Recently bought an MR2 with a V6 transplant - I don't intend crashing that either.
Gents, we don't even (and probably will never) know if the accident was actually speed related.
Or even caused by driver error. Perhaps something technical failed? Guerrilla cyclist whipped out a laser pointer?
All kinds of assumptions can be made.
What seems fairly certain is that the lads loved cars and driving.
On here of all places this should command impartial respect?

(p.s good luck with the MR2 they're lethal ;-) )

In that video they are even laughing about the lack of road side barriers and that flying off the edge would kill them. 100% chance of death and hurt I think he says. They are then trying to show off going very quickly on film, tyre screeching around corners. Seriously that driving is absolutely nuts on that road, the guy is just crazy doing that. Surely the results are not that difficult to imagine?? The wreck was inevitable sooner or later.
Luckily most of us get away with youthful indiscretions and errors in judgement are not so seriously punished as these guys miscalculations were. No one ever deserves an ending such as this, I just hope that at least a few people watch this video and maybe realise that this sort of driving, which I know many people are guilty of, though maybe not on mountain roads, can lead to absolute tragedy and that maybe a track day would be a wise investment as a way to let off steam.
Just take it easy on mountain roads, enjoy the view, no need to go insane.
RIP lads!
I've watched the video and in my opinion I don't think they were doing anything daft. Yes a quick blast up to 100 mph, but they weren't maintaining that speed. They were having a laugh but were also living the dream. I know if I'd been driving that pass I'd have been passed the VW Up a lot earlier. I'd also not be videoing it!.
Such a shame to lose some enthusiasts and fellow petrol heads in such a tragic way.
