Hi new to the forum so i hope this is allowed. I have a VW Touran 1.9 TDI 05 plate, with a very unfortunate fault. Every time it rains I end up breaking down.

So picture the scene, I drop the wife off to work which is about 3 miles away from our house, I have the two kids in the back as I leave the wife work to go on to the main road the car starts to shudder, engine management light comes on along with the screen saying "engine fault garage". This is the 4th time its happened and the recovery guy that is always sent out is getting sick of me.

The underneath looks ok, under the bonnet is as dry as a bone! when the recovery bloke comes and reads the faults it always comes up with random faults, all four occasions have been different codes. Its getting to the point that i worry that its going to rain, and thats no life to have.

Is there anyone who can help me? The garage just scratch their heads. I am not mechanically minded but will have a go at most things.

Thanks in advance

keith

Any signs theres water getting into the cabin at all?
Steamy windows, damp carpets etc?

My Passat had CCM modules under the carpet and when the pollen filter area got jammed with leaf debris the rain water over flowed into the cabin and soaked the module giving loads of grief till I fixed and moved it

I imagine it'll be water leaking onto a wire somewhere. If under the bonnet is dry then maybe through the wheel arch? I had an MR2 turbo where the water would drip through the engine cover vents onto the dizzy cap and it'd cut out. Not fun, I feel your pain.

Thanks for the input I've checked and double checked the cabin with no sign of dampness and the only place I haven't checked Ia the wheel arch it's really starting to make me want to scream.

check under the steering wheel, theres quite often a fuse box there which could be getting wet maybe?

this happened again yesterday this time an unexpected rain shower on the M5. Every thing cut out and i was stuck with no breaks, no steering. I cant help but think its coming through the grill and the water is shorting something. Any further ideas would be a great help. I thought it could be happening when i have the demisters on???

Or do i just sell the car?

Thanks

Id start by locating the ecu and checking that first as its the only thing I can think would make the car cut out due to moisture ingress.
Check the electrics around the battery area too if there are relays present etc.

Why don't you take it to a garage to diagnose? Having a car cut out on the motorway is putting your family's and other road users at risk. You know the car has a problem so why keep driving it?

I assume if you sell it you will be telling the buyer of the fault which will reduce the asking price anyway.

A couple of bits of info on here.

http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php/...

I had the Passat / A6 problem on my superb where a drain under the battery gets blocked and it slowly fills with water. Luckily my own full inspection of the vehicle showed this up before the water got into the cabin through the pollen filter.

Good Luck!
