RE: Toyota GT86: PH Fleet
Discussion
No, no, no, no, no and no! The alloys look even more hideous than the standard ones. Give it a rest Toyota (and Subaru) and just give us nice alloys and 250bhp.
What is the point in this thing when a Fiesta ST will absolutely clean it's clocks and still be a lot of fun, and is still cheaper!!

A running-in period isn't advised (we've checked with Toyota, honest!) so the full fury of 200hp and 151lb ft can be unleashed from the off.
Really? That advice has changed then. When I bought mine, it had 350 miles on it and the advised running-in period was to keep it under 4K revs for 1000 miles.Probably the most irritating 650 miles of my life
Nearly all performance manufacturers engines are fine, it's the gearboxes that need some nannying (with autos - manuals can drop the clutch and drift out the showroom if you like).
Running in period is a legacy from yesteryear! Although I imagine manufacturers like the fact you're looking after the car for them within the warranty period...
Go on Matt, get back to Toyota HQ and ask if they've read their own handbook!
Anyone hear in the Toyota UK retail network able to give us some PCP quotes on the new basic version? Interested to hear what residuals Toyota Finance are offering with the reduced spec.
Intrigued to see how they stack up to an equivalent ND Mx5.

The dealership told me not to bother running in my GT86 but the owner's handbook (p 161) said not to exceed 4K for the first 1000 miles, etc, etc.

Interesting! I had seen a few forum posts quoting the handbook but conveniently ours is missing one... The direct email response was:Go on Matt, get back to Toyota HQ and ask if they've read their own handbook!
"Hi Matt, nothing needed, just drive. Best regards John"
Happy to oblige!

Agree with you on the first point, not on the second. It's not always speed or aesthetics! As a man whose only experience of RWD is a diesel 1 Series I would argue you may not have seen its best bits, if you catch my drift (ahem). Fiesta is fun but GT86 has its own talents as well. What is the point in this thing when a Fiesta ST will absolutely clean it's clocks and still be a lot of fun, and is still cheaper!!
Matt
Looking forward to reading about life with your GT86. As a two year BRZ owner, I agree that the factory spoiler is not a thing of beauty (without it the car looks good, but replacing it with 5 Axis or TRD spoiler looks better), but I wouldn't want to be without the digital speedo which means you only have to look at one instrument.
Hmmm I'm not sure about this...
If your'e going to poverty spec it then you might as well go all the way.
Japan got the GT86 'RC'. Equivalent to approximately £16,200 and it literally came with steel wheels and un-painted front bumpers. Perfect for a modifiers starting position.
Like someone already said before me, the difference between this model and the one above it is too small so it would make sense to go for the upgrade.

Why would you buy the Toyota over the BRZ? The Subaru is the same money, but has:
But none of them make it 'drive' better, that seems a good reason to me.- Rear Spoiler
- 17" Wheels
- Climate Control
- Cruise Control
- Handsfree Locking
- Push Button Start
- Digital Speedo
- HID Headlights

I will stick my neck out and say I actually prefer those 16" wheels to the regular fit 17s; they need a darker paint colour to work however, plus I'm not keen on the flat red.
The biggest question for me though is, would it be worth spending the extra? If it was me, I'd be looking for every excuse to step up. I think the price gap needs to be larger - if you can afford a £22.5k car new, a £25k one isn't going to be that that much further away. And in the latter, you won't be constantly reminded of cost-cutting. Make the Primo 20/21k and it would appear better value in my eyes.

Shame they're just a little cramped for passengers for my usage
Be interested to read the reports though
I think it looks better with those wheels and no spoiler.
If I had the cash and no kids to carry, I'd buy one.
Too many modern "sports" cars are a triumph of turbo power over frontal area and wide tyres/thick anti-roll bars over a high centre of gravity. Yesterday, I was following a Gt86 that was behind a Focus ST, and it was obvious which one had been designed for good handling from the outset......

I actually like it on the smaller wheels and with no spoiler. It's more like the paired back race base version they get in Japan.
Looking forward to seeing it at Beaulieu this weekend, my Impreza is on the Method Wheels stand so I'll keep an eye out for the car while I'm wandering round
