RE: Toyota GT86: PH Fleet

I'd love to say I had one of those, but I'm talking about the breadvan EP3, which can manage mid 6 to 60 and around 16 to 100, with FWD.
The commonly-quoted 6.4s to 60 for the Civic is probably anomalous given that the DC5 Integra manages ~7.1 to 60 despite having more power, less weight and being geared to hit 60 in second gear whilst the EP3 in UK/EU trim won't. So it's unlikely to be anywhere near as fast as some of the stats suggest.Primo has been base model in OZ since day 1.
Tyres are a big negative, not the grip, the sidewalls just give up, VSC kicks in and you go nowhere. Swapped them out at at 3K. The full spec had nothing I wanted, more weight. Digital speedos annoy as there is something changing in front of you, you look down to see if it is a warning light. Interior is all black, very nice at night. I did fit aftermarket HIDs, they are even better than top spec model as I get to keep the dashboard headlight adjustement. I used some of the $6K I saved on the tyres and exhaust.

Ah, new v. used already! That most valid of comparisons. I thought the Golf R would come up first. As mentioned people need to buy new GT86s for you to all go snapping up the used ones. Which you will, right? Easy to forget also that the GT86/BRZ project was a ground-up thing and that's clearly going to take more money than throwing a diff and a turbo at a hatchback.
Few days in and already the speedo is really annoying but everything else is great! There's a PH sticker on so that's at least a 15hp gain. Look forward to seeing those of you at Simply Japanese on Sunday.
And as for the MX-5 comparison, watch this space. Plans are afoot! Dan 'I really, really love my Eunos' Trent was not going to pass up this kind of twin test opportunity!
Matt
Re the speedo. Surely you will only notice that as annoying if you've driven a model with the digi version? Doubt I'd notice it otherwise?Few days in and already the speedo is really annoying but everything else is great! There's a PH sticker on so that's at least a 15hp gain. when you've driven one with a digi you use it all the time, and i don't normally like digital speedos.
But the Rev counter dominates your view being central, bigger and brighter. The analogue speedo is a sad grey orphan to one side....
I don't see a Golf R as a comparison personally. The R is a great hatch - do everything from comfort to a fast, spirited drive. The GT fits into a much tighter niche for people who value its dynamics. On everything else it will lose, comfort, drivability and of course, outright speed. The more i think about it the more i think the new vs old comparison is valid for the GT86. It is clearly an enthusiasts car, therefore, such a person will consider more options, which will to include older cars. That's less the case when somebody is just in the market for a hot hatch, saloon, coupe or whatever. Best comparison is the MX5, hopefully those who understand the qualities of that car but have an aversion to hairdressing will see the GT as a valid alternative.
the digi speedo was great because it was right where you looked. I'm sure I can work round it!
Matt
I discounted the GT86 because the ride comfort was poor. I'd like to know if it's better on the 16" wheels.
I recently test drove a couple of Fiestas around an industrial estate with craters *literally* like the moon, and was surprised at how much better the ride was on 15" wheels (Zetec) than 17" (Zetec S). Yes, the suspension is slightly stiffer (8% I think) on the Zetec S, but I blame the 17" wheels for completely destroying the ride.
It really pisses me off that manufacturers tie the wheel size to the trim/engine spec (the brakes are the same on the Fiesta 100/125/140bhp). I blame the idiots in marketing - they should offer a "chav pack" for people who want to ruin the ride and appearance of their cars. I want all of the power and all of the sidewall dammit!

Why bother when you can get a second hand BRZ/GT86 from £14k?
And the award for stupidest post of the day goes to... A second hand car costs less than a brand new one. Who would have thought it?
Why would anyone buy any new car when you can get an old one someone else specced, farted in, maintained and looked after....hmm let me think.

New vs used can be stupid but in this very case, not stupid at all when you have a choice - GT86 at launch was overpriced I think and the market corrected that, they dropped to a "natural" price very quickly and then did really well in terms of depreciation from 18 month old to 3 year old +.
So yes, buying an early car at 24 months made a lot of sense compared to new (forget the Primo thing) as you still get 3 years warranty.
I only owned mine for 8 months from Nov 14 to June 15 and lost £0 (couldn't live with the engine). Had I bought new and even keeping it for a couple of years, depreciation would have been much worse. But obviously, you need someone to buy them new...

Our new one will be here this week with some luck
Due to the delay, the dealer has lent us their Aero demo with a mad wing.
Glad ours is the standard one.
We also had the tuition at Silverstone on Sunday. 9 laps over 2 sessions around Stowe. Excellent.

Put the Primo up for sale back in 2012 and it was likely to have worked as an entry level and cheap GT86. But 3 years later it's going head to head with the better spec'd used market.
