Jaguar XKR convertible. No contest. Goes like stink when you want to. Cruises magnificently when you are not in a hurry. Whilst the boot is not great you have the benefit of the rear seats for additional luggage. Really comfortable when you not pressing on. Hood is very well insulated. Also not incredibly common so a wee bit special. In my opinion a highly under-rated car. Well within your price range
This, this, this.
Been all over Europe in mine, always get loads of smiles, is super comfy, and goes like a stabbed rat when you apply the load pedel. Also just has a classy air about it, not perceived as a hooligan, even though it can be.

My landlord turned up in one of these, bloody lovely, must remember to ask him about it next time I see him.

I agree with KFC above, one off daft purchase, buy a used AM! Early DB9's are available for £45,000 and a half decent selection of V8V's.

Would go the XK or SL(K) route myself. Don't forget that Jag still has the XK and the F-type in the range, and for good reasons, they're completely different cars.

XK is dead.

You'll either have to go slightly older than intended, or a bit over budget, but how about a Maserati Granturismo?
I don't know or care about running costs etc, JUST LOOK AT IT!
And it sounds even better than it looks.

I've just bought a 2008 SL 63 after selling my Boxster RS60.
It is a very nice open top car plus has the advantage of the clever folding hard top. It is both (in performance pack guise) thrilling fast car but you can put it in comfort mode and cruise all day.
The normally aspirated 6.2 litre engine has a wicked sound track but you can achieve 26 MPG with the roof up at motorway speeds. I am only averaging 13 at the moment but by god do I have a smile on my face. At this moment in time you can buy one for about £50K and they are not going to depreciate that much now as they probably levelled out price wise

How about an RS5? I think they look fantastic, plus they would be a great car for cruising long distances in comfort.

That seems to be a strange way to go about choosing a car laugh

Can you give us an example or two of vehicles that portray the image you've stopped working? Apart from Motability Ford Focuses and wheelchairs

I fear you may be in for a nasty shock come resale time; you can pick up its predecessor (SL55) for £15k- £20k at the moment, and I wouldn't be surprised if they're still dropping.

Yup, when the SL70 or whatever comes out I don't know see how you can expect the SL63 to go anywhere other than where the SL55 already went. Its a decent sports car, certainly not a classic and now yesterdays news and looking stale.

I agree they are not a bomb proof purchase', I managed to get mine for £37K so plan to keep it a few years.
Three or four years ago a decent SL 55 was about £30K plus and decent spec 55's are still around £25K that is if you don't want one with starship mileage.
To explain my reasoning behind not deprecating much new the car I bought was in excess of £120K seven years down the line and only 27K on the clock I bought it for £37K so the bulk of depreciation has taken place OK it will loose a bit over the next few years but not a great deal in relative terms .

If we are focusing on Mercedes and Jaguar, emphasis on the Jag obviously hehe I'd look at this:

http://used.jaguar.co.uk/search#/details/2632295

and this:

http://used.mercedes-benz.co.uk/used/2014/mercedes...

Both beautiful looking and from authorized dealerships. Excellent manufacturer warranty comes with both and smiles all day when driving biggrin
