Gradual lifting.

Pull out to L3 to overtake then back into L2 in front of them.
If they were doing say 60 as you passed them, then lift off and maintain 58. See what they do. Then drop to 56 and see what they do. And so on and so on. See if they react. Remember what MLMs hate doing most is changing lane. By slowing down you force them to either overtake you or to realise how annoying it is to meet a fellow MLM.

What amazes me is the amount of HGVs sitting in lane 2 at night lately, it's roughly half the heavy traffic doing this too.
I've noticed on the M74 at night (think deserted empty road through miles of nothing, 50+% of traffic HGV from 8pm - midnight, probably 75-80% between midnight & 6am) that the HGVs will generally move out to L2 if they spot anything stopped on the hard shoulder. I guess some of them might decide just to stay there on the 3 lane sections, though I've always found that they move back in after passing the breakdown.

So, the situation is, your driving down a fairly quiet motorway in lane 1. You are closing in on Mr or Mrs MLM plodding along in lane 2, whilst lane 1 (your lane) is empty.

What do you do next?

I personally continue in lane one, I know this is undertaking and wrong, however as far as I'm concerned I am maintaining my speed, and shouldn't need to move 4 lanes (2 in 2 out) to overtake.
I carry on in L1.

Quite often I find L1 is quieter than L2 or L3 and certainly far less stressful.

Lane 1 all the way. If they're thick enough to be an MLM, they're too thick to realise the subtlety of any sort of lesson teaching.
This ^^^.

"Orbiting" is especially pointless (as is any attempt to pass on one's godlike driving skills to lesser mortals).

Normally I go 1-3-1, deliberately keeping my left indicator on as I cross slowly in front of them to see if they get the hint.

I have in the past used full beam headlights on them while driving at night. I gave this up after one confused numpty moved into lane 3 rather than lane 1. God only knows what was going through his mind.

Long flash from way back to alert them.
  • If they move across (to L1), indicate and move out, pass them and then revert to L1 (you then watch them move back into L2 behind you).
  • Should they stay in L2 after your "wake up call", simply coast past at my steady speed whilst in L1 watching for my escape plan, if need arises.

Great fun

My record is 6
More commonly known as orbiting hehe

Usually get bored after 3 laps though. Must try harder smile
I'd love to try this, sadly there aren't any 3-lanes motorways/dual carriage ways up here though frown

Otherwise I'd just cruise by in lane 1 without adjusting my speed (no choice anyway as again it's all 2-lane).

I'm with Bob on this too.

if you caught up with the MLM you're cruising faster than they are. Why spend 10 minutes playing games at their speed when you can just pass and crack on.

If I orbited every MLM I encountered I'd be travelling at their own pace which defeats the object of passing them in the first place.

Just think yourselves lucky that you have middle lanes. We only have inside and outside, so don't have the luxury of being able to pass in lane 3.
Exactly. We even have a motorway with no hard shoulder frownfrown

But we could do something risky and demonstrate our superior skills and knowledge at the same time.

How can we ignore that opportunity?

When it's 4 lanes it must really cause them a dilemma. I think they go for the 3rd lane mainly though rather than 2 as it probably is slightly less likely to make them have to make a decision or react to other traffic.

If 3 lanes and they are in the middle and late at night I tend to keep speed with them in lane 1 at their 8pm position so it starts to "worry" them. Well, ity gets boring at 3am on the M40

I must buy one of these one day to enhance the effect

Continue in Lane 1, its perfectly legal to do so in the circumstances you have described. But be aware that said numpty may suddenly decide to be in Land 1 as you approach them.
You can normally tell if you watch them for a few seconds before passing them.

If I'm bored I like to position myself in their left hand blind spot and stay there, you can see some of them become visibly perturbed.

Carry on regardless. I'm using the road correctly by driving on the left unless overtaking. If they want to be retards I leave them to get on with it.

It's just a shame plod are guilty of it a lot too, removes any chance of these retards ever getting taken to task.

If the road is clear I see no point in moving from lane 1 to pass a MLM but I do take a little extra care when approaching them just in case they fancy moving into me.

If I'm bored and in the TVR I may drop a cog or two when level with their passenger door and then press the loud pedal to the carpet to see if that breaks their focus on grasping the wheel and staring straight ahead. On a couple of occasions it has been apparent in my rear view mirror they have been rudely awakened hehe
