Is It Reasonable?

Is it reasonable to have no interest whatever in any kind of motorsort, and still consider yourself a petrolhead?

I don't need the 'petrolhead' label in order to define myself; I don't have a Ferrari jacket, a PH sticker, a "funny" (really not funny) t-shirt, or one with a picture of a car, or the name sof some road junctions on it.

I do, however, consider myself to be a petrolhead. That said, I am increasingly considering the possibility that I might not be, because motorsort of all kinds bores the pants off me. I make excepton for classic regularities; but that's less a motorsort, and more just a drive in the country. At night. In the rain.

I do enjoy hillclimhing, but only as a challenge against myself. I have no interest in rankings, classes, places or trophies.

I am a competent spanner wielder; I have owned a wide variety of cars - up to eight at the sime time; I've also done a bit of sourcing and inspecton in my time. So I do enjoy being around cars; and I like to think, I know a fair bit about them

I have been to motorsort events - British Grand Prix (back in the Brands Hatch days), rally stages (back in the Lombard RAC days), and BTCC (back when it was a bit amateurish). I've done track days (a lot of dick waving, and not much fun), and been driven round circits (by Nikki Lauda, and some touring car bloke). It all just leaves me cold. And incredibly bored.

Am I normal? Or am I slightly weird like the rest of you?

If you love cars over and above their capacity to transport you from a to b then yes, you are a petrolhead - at least to some degree.

But being driven around a track by Nikki Lauda and not being moved by it? That means you're weird as well! As we all are in our own way.

Ah, ok. Could have been a Zafira I suppose...

But it was Nikki Lauda! Was he not interesting company at least? Had you seen the film 'Rush' first? That might have gotten you in the right frame of mind.

How do you end up being driven round by Lauda if you have no interest in motorsport?

I'm buggered if I know smile.

I was in about 1982, at the Brands Hatch Grand Prix. So no, I hadn't seen Rush first wink.

I remember being in the Transit as we went down a hill, under a (Dunlop?) bridge, and up a hill. And tnat's about it. It was probably something you paid for, and it was my birthday, so that's probably what happened.

I dont remember him saying much.

Being a 'Petrolhead' is as much an attitude as it is what car you drive or, in this case, what area of the car world you're interested in.

I love Motorsport, in fact I'm almost the opposite of the OP in that I have little interest in supercars (as an example). I'm also not particularly skilled at the oily bits.
We're both petrolheads though and together we cover a good deal of the spectrum!

Drifting, on the other hand... wink

Nope, can't stand motor racing of any kind (banger racing is ok),couldn't give a monkey's how fast some famous driver can go round a tarmac circle. However I've always loved normal cars but had no interest in Ferraris,Lamborghinis etc, they just do nothing for me,a Mk2 Escort Rs2000 will turn my head more than a Veyron.

I'm similar, supercars don't really interest me that much. I appreciate them but not overly bothered. If I had the money for one, maybe i'd be interested more. An Escort Cosworth will have my eyes pop out of my head, while an Aston Martin or a Ferrari probably wouldn't get a second look from me. It's not a jealousy thing, I can't afford a Cosworth either. The only supercars i'd be seriously interested in are the F40 and a few of the specials like the 288 GTO, GT2 Porsche, etc.

As for motorsport, my interest is mainly in a technical level. The racing itself isn't usually that interesting, the cars are.

Sorry to hijack but you'd have passed out if you had been in Northants yesterday with around 75 of them in one place.

Alas mine wasn't one of them.

Agree with Doofus.

Years ago I was a huge motorsport fan and used to arrange my work/social life around the F1 calendar including attending one or two GPs. Now I rarely watch F1 and think the only way it can be livened up are random concealed landmines.

It depends on the Motorsport , bikes yes, classic cars, yes, F1 no

One of the best races I ever watched was a classic touring car race at Oulton Park a few years ago, they really should put it on as a race at the touring cars, it was fantastic , minis, lotus cortinas ,all being thrashed to within a inch of their lives.

It wasn't an exhibition race, they all wanted to win at any cost.

The other was a MX5 race at oulton park, they had that many entries they had to run 2 races, and it threw it down, they were everywhere, up the grass sideways

Mind you I've usually got a camera round my neck

The irony being an RS2000 is famous for its motorsport heritage, and a Veyron not eligible for any motorsport category and never having been raced anywhere (to my knowledge).

I think you're slightly weird, but only because you're worried about PHers opinions.

What ? Assuming you mean historic regularities, the vast majority (if not all) of them take place during daylight. Some of the multi-day historic road rallies (Rally of the Tests and Le Jog in particular) do include evening/night sections, but they are not usually regularity.

I'm not particularly fussed by any of the professional, high falutin' big money stuf either - the only thing that perks my interest is banger racing, which is great fun and should be on any petrol heads bucket list IMO.

Like cars, hate sport.

So no surprise I don't like motorsport. Where's the fun in watching other people do it?

Can watch touring car if it's the only thing on.
