It is a little bit of a pain but its a once a year event and well worth it in my view. And in most cases just planning ahead a little you can bypass/miss the worst of it - just like the OP has done.

And I say this as someone who is impacted as I live in a village that is effectively blocked in from 7 to 7 - and mildly worried as my wife due tomorrow and if it comes today - well it will be interesting getting to the hospital!!!

They get better year on year at trying to minimise the disruption - just think of it as a one off car free day a year (except for people who really need to get somewhere) and the road closures etc would have less impact. The comms could be a little better as its hard to work out the emergency crossing points (as one example).

But in spite of all that - I still think its a great event.

Lets put it another way ... we all know we would suffer it for a London F1 street race right!!

Working today and we are actually on the cycle route in Weybridge, not sure why we are open as it is a completely pointless excercise; no one can get in to see me, I can't do test drives and if someone rings and wants to see a car, they can't.

It would be far better to have an answerphone message, directing people to our other sites.

I got caught by this in 2011 when they did a test for the Olympics.
I also got caught heading to the Eurostar. C43 Estate full of family off to the South of France. I had not long crossed the Thames and was in Twickenham or somewhere when the Road Closed barriers went up. Cue total chaos. The thing is they hadn't planned in any diversions (!).

To cut a long story short a copper realised how ridiculous the situation was and gave a us a police escort through the closed roads and out the other end.

Not venturing south today.

Just walked to the end of the road and what the bikes go by, will pop back later

Please explain why you love it. The sign looks shiny.

Cyclists love events like this as they are enthusiasts doing something they love. The authorities are very pro cycling at the moment as cycling has so many benefits and is therefore encouraged.

I hope that Motorsport can pull off public relations successes like British Cycling so that city centres can be closed off for Motorsport events too.

OP, getting back from a holiday late on Saturday night and then getting up at 4am on Sunday morning to go to work sounds like incredibly bad planning.

Yeah, that's the only reason I don't discourage cyclists. Rather them than a nation of obese couch potatoes.

As for motorsport in a city, I'd love to hear a GT car rumbling down a road with high buildings on each side. Would look and sound amazing. https://youtu.be/JAQEsc9jIVY I'd probably be nursing a semi though much like when I see a female cyclist in tight lycra. spin

We live near Sheen Gate . An entrance to Richmond Park, which is part of the route. All morning long we''ve had poor souls trying to rat run around the road closures. But, there's nowhere for them to go.

There's some very frustrated motorists around these parts at present. Me and 'Master B are just about to pop out to watch the pros stream by. We live on a rather tricky part of the route. There was almost carnage last year. Not least with the chase vehicles.

All that needed to be done was to tell the toopot in the Peugeot estate what was happening, he would have cleared the roads in a flash

Just had a look on the website, the amateur race has been run and the road has re-opened pretty much on time, at 14:20 the professional race comes through but this is a rolling closure, there was what I assume, a dummy run of this rolling closure yesterday afternoon as loads of Police bikes and cars came through at a relative low speed, blocking off junctions and clearing the road ahead.

They do link, although not exactly a city centre it is still a fairly busy set of roads that's used heavily over any weekend. There should be more of these for both motorsports and cyclists. Riding around Liverpool on a closed road circuit last year as part of the Tour Of Britain was amazing, there were thousands of people on their bikes and at the Wirral Rally there are again, thousands of people watching and coming to see it.

The joys of being freelance. I was lucky to get a holiday in biggrin

Just come back from Bayswater by the route I checked out. Surprisingly quiet in Notting Hill and Shepherds Bush but the fun started at Hammersmith Broadway. Nothing was moving and it even took me 5mins to get around it on the Vespa.

Hammersmith bridge was clear but massive queues heading north. Had a clear and easy run down through Roehampton until the A3 heading east. Barely moving so a bit of filtering until I could turn right into the back roads.

Half an hour to get home via the long way but if I had been in my car I'd suspect I'd still be at Hammersmith Broadway.

What was concerning was lack of signage or anything telling people what was going on, and advise on which roads not to go down.

If only they'd run it in a city with a network of trains that run under the streets or overground so people have other options...oh wait a minute.

Euston Road was getting a bit clogged up an hour ago - I guess people trying to us the A40/M40 rather than A4/M4.

Anyway, off to the garden for a beer.
