Through a lack of communication,

My 1996 1.8 Mazda MX5 MK1 was left idling for 4 hours can it case any damage?

Only to your wallet with 4 hours worth of petrol burnt.

The cooling fan has worked overtime though.

I think normal car engines are fine. I know air cooled motors on small motorcycles or older cars/bikes it can cause to overheat though.

It'll be ok, we left a jazz running for about 14 hours on Friday, still idling fine on Friday morning!
