An Impreza has to make the list if we are taking B-Road blasters!

Or the utterly phenomenal Impreza Type RA for a bargain basement price. For those who don't know much about the Type RA it is possibly the best handling and most raw of the classics and is a superb drive.

Always the Ra - omce youve driven one a boggo STi is boring as ste

The only real downside is that you've run out of gears after 12 seconds so you have to slow down and do it all again.

Clio Trophy?
I'll give that a biased shout too. Brilliant little car
+2, epic.
Another Trophy fan here, they're as much fun as I've ever had in a car.

A grands worth of Mk2 MR2 would be best smiles per mile IMO. More reliable than anything francais too, even at 20 years old. Fantastic for B Road fun. 50mph feels like 100 because your bum is a couple of inches off the ground.

The STi-RA is the one to go for if you can, the WRX-RA has the lightweight shell and close ratio box but not the DCCD.

Not sure if that one is a genuine WRX-RA or not, I forget whether all the RA models had a roof scoop or just the STi-RA.

To be honest though, if fun and involvement are the main requirements the OP may as well save some money and buy a Mk1 MX5. Heaps of fun, low running costs, less risk to licence because you can have your fun at lower speeds.

I used to have one of those.... What a bike, and even with me being 6ft tall and slightly too large for it it still managed to put a smile on my face every time.

Yup, top choice. I'd take one over the r26 too if B road driving is the key factor. I went from the clio to the megane, and although the r26 is a fantastic car and incredible point to point car, I missed the raw fun factor of the Clio. The turn in and adjustability in corners is just incredible. My friend at the time had a DC2 and we were both hugely impressed with each other's cars. The dc2 felt a little softer all round though and a little more compliant. If you're not worried about interior plastics then you won't go wrong with either!

I also went Clio to megane, but I think the megane is that little bit better in every way. No less adjustable in the corners, but a whole load more grip, a diff that drags you round the corner and more power to throw you out. The clios are fantastic, but the megane is just better IMO

Ive had both renaults and the sti-ra

The Megane is less frantic at the wheel than the Clio - possibly down to the epas but theres a bunch of other differences that could contribute. Its a much grippier and more stable car and as a result the limits are much higher.
It feels closer to the impreza in many ways - not least because it doesn't come alive until you're going really rather fast.

If you have fast, clear, well sighted roads to drive on then you want the meg, small, tight, busy ones then you want the Clio.

If you want an impreza get an STi-RA because its the best one

I'd also pick the Trophy over the Megane, although it would be a tough decision. The R26 does show it's weight a little on smaller b roads in my opinion and the extra torque/power makes it a little to capable of going everywhere too quickly, not as it's faster as in the real world it's not all that much faster, it's just a whole lot more accessible.

I've had a 172 Cup, 182 Trophy, R26 and now have a 197 cup, also have done a fair few miles in a DC2, which I'd love to own myself but i think you might struggle to find a good one now.

I can agree with this, I found my Trophy suited tighter B-Roads. I think that I preferred my Clio 200 Cup though to the Trophy, it felt better on the roads I chose to drive it on. They may still be out of budget but R27 Clios are are in your money bracket.

I dove an R26 back to back with my 200. Fast but not as fun. I think it would be to competent for the driving roads I use.

A well looked after DC2 would be a good shout too. Brilliant car and if looked after would look after you come resale time. I got more for what I pad for mine after two years ownership.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I've been looking closely at Clio's and Megane's for a while now, if one comes up local to me I don't think I'd say no.

I'd love a bike I really would, but there's just something in my brain telling me I shouldn't laugh

The MX-5 idea isn't a bad one, supercharged or not I've heard they're quite the drive.

Impreza's are still on my list, I just love the noise they make.

As for a DC2, I'd love one, or an ek9 Civic but it's getting harder to find really nice ones. Also yeah an S2000 would be nice but christ they've rocketed in value, or is that just me?

Another vote for an RX8, I bought mine cheap knowing it had hot start issues then spent 2.5k on a rebuilt and some other work, the engine is now guaranteed for the next 30k or two years smile
Interesting, always wanted an RX8 but was put off by the hot start issue. £2.5k isn't bad, considering they go for pennies nowadays!

MR2's are a good shout too, still love the look of them!

Not in the same league against the DC2 or Clio IMO.

DC2 is fantastic but bank on spending some serious cash to get one up to scratch. Arches, bushes and suspension at the least. .

Time of year for soft tops.

The S2000 really is a great car and certainly will become a classic in the long run. Plus frankly the price they are how can they go lower

How about a Clio 182 then super charge it?

You could probably get s CATD VX220 for that - usually written off for minor damage as the clams are expensive to replace if sourced from Vauxhall.

Trophy is a great shout - been in one and it was a really nice package.

I've had an EK9 and I loved it - I imagine a DC2 is even better with the B18.

S2000s aren't particularly good though.
