The STi-RA is the one to go for if you can, the WRX-RA has the lightweight shell and close ratio box but not the DCCD.

Not sure if that one is a genuine WRX-RA or not, I forget whether all the RA models had a roof scoop or just the STi-RA.

To be honest though, if fun and involvement are the main requirements the OP may as well save some money and buy a Mk1 MX5. Heaps of fun, low running costs, less risk to licence because you can have your fun at lower speeds.

I sort of see your point ref the MX5 however the Impreza can do something that none of the others can do in terms of the drama of driving one, especially at high boost. Of course this isn't necessary cheap although it can be built up to over time so it doesn't need to cost an excessive amount in one hit.

There is something raw and special about a classic that is well sorted at high boost. I owned a normal one for two years and then did many upgrades to it and it transformed the car into something completely different.

Clearly you haven't experienced a 270bhp MK1 MX5 - sideways at the touch of the throttle, all that power through two 195 tyres, weighing a smidge over 1000kg.

My 440bhp RX7 was far more civilised and any 4WD scooby is dull by comparison.

I've experienced many turbo'd/supercharged cars over the years and some very wild cars (570bhp Impreza Classic/Focus RS 450bhp/MR2 330bhp etc) so I've got a little experience of fast modified cars

I appreciate Impreza's aren't for everyone but their talent over a B-Road in the spirit of this thread is unquestionable and they can be a lot of fun too although for me, they really come alive over 350bhp and they can sound utterly superb. What you equate to their dullness, is also their huge capability. They are so much more capable in any weather/road condition that they often feel very stable unless deliberately provoked unlike the other cars as you've pointed out.

To be fair you can send a standard mx5 sideways at 15mph if you really want to (had one of those too) but imo its not something anyone should be doing on a public road - hence rwd heroism leaves me a bit cold.

Not that there's anything wrong with a supercharged mx5 of course..
