Can anyone recommend any - that is you had to make a claim and the process was simple and easy without lots of quibbling?

Thanks in advance.

Direct Car Excess. I've never had to claim but I know claims handling would be fair, etc.

I was with Insurance4CarHire, and took out an annual policy with them for around £40 (after the Quidco cashback).

I hired a Peugeot MPV-thingy in France, from Hertz, and had the horror of a ruddy great motorhome in front of us, slipping backwards on a hill, crumpling the front bumper.

Filled in the standard accident form, informed Hertz, and on handing the car back paid a very reasonable final amount for the damage - £450 - the stated excess was £1000 but they made a realistic estimate of what it would really cost to repair.

Back home I asked for claim forms from Insurance4CarHire and proceeded to fill in the mother of all claim forms. Sent it off and got the full payout around 10 days later.

I'd recommend them, but the claim form is very, very thorough...

I used questor about two years ago and made a claim for £400 or so thanks to a smashed windscreen in oz.

Had to provide a fair bit of detail but it was clear what was needed and I got the money back within a month.

It was a lot cheaper than reducing excess with hire car but you are out of pocket for a while

I've used Allianz. Reasonably priced and I had a small claim and they were excellent. Phone up, given a personal handler who'd dealt with the claim from start to finish and only one claim form to submit.

They do require a fair bit of info so keep all the paperwork but the claim was fully settled within two weeks and I bought my home insurance through them on the strength of how they handled my claim.
