I know they were aiming for this, but I am surprised that it happened so quickly!

Not surprising, how many marquees do they have under the umbrella?

Not sure if these are included.

MAN
Scania
Ducati
Various other tie ins, especially in China, and a 20% share in Suzuki.

You'd need to canvas opinion on that

And out of all those Audi and Porsche contribute 2/3rds of the groups profits

Some revealing stats lurk within the VW group’s first-half results: two of its premium brands deliver more than two-thirds of its earnings. Audi’s operating profit jumped 7% to €2.9 billion while Porsche’s soared by 21% to €1.7bn, boosted by the new Macan selling like hot cakes.

I seem to recall VAG have been in this position before, 5 or 6 years ago perhaps, before being re-overtaken by Toyota.

It'll probably continue to be a 3-horse-race between VAG, Toyota and GM for some time.

I wonder why GM do so well, their presence in North America?

I am struggling to think of any of their current range over here (bar the obvious) I would buy.

Buick sells very well in China. Apart from that a lot of Vauxhalls are sold in the UK for a start.

GM is realistically much smaller than Toyota or Volkswagen despite selling a similar number of cars per year.

Opel do reasonably well in the rest of Europe as well. But I can't see GM overtaking Toyota or VW in the future, I doubt Toyota will regain the lead either.
