Obviously doing 95 in the outside lane of the motorway flashing at everyone. And as it came past I couldn't help but notice, it is a truly awful looking car. It's like someone has taken a Land Rover defender to the gym, taken the hinges off the doors and then given it to someone from Bradford with a chrome factory to bling up.

How do they sell any? If you want a Mercedes 4x4, surely you'd have the ML? Or even the GLA? As they're more car like and generally nicer. This G Wagon had some horrific chrome wheels on it as well (to match the 10 million candle drl's) so no chance it ever goes off road. And if you wanted something unnecessarily chav you'd have a hummer. Or a Range Rover sport. If you wanted a 'luxury' 4x4, you'd have a Range Rover, or an X5, or a cayenne.

This one was a G350 Bluetec as well which did make me chuckle a bit as he was obviously flashing people over as it'd taken him the previous 3 miles to get it to 95. I came to the conclusion that it's purely a status symbol thing.

Does anyone on here have one and can answer why they've actually managed to sell any?

Eta: previously the only one I've seen before this is when they were a bit more utilitarian. An older chap used to come shooting on the farm years ago and always turned u with a weird greeny coloured one that was plastered in mud. it was probably H Reg or so. 3 door. He loved it as a utility vehicle. Seems they've changed a bit.

I saw one in London once which had been through AMG and Brabus - you could hear it several streets away - great engine...
and I quite like the styling

It's a question I think you could ask of anybody buying any car.

Why buy an E Class when you could have a 5 series.
Why buy a 911 when you could have an F Type
Why buy a g wagon.

It's different. Rarer. Very well built. It has look at me all over it. It has decent residuals. You can accessorise it. Are they reasons enough? Probably not to you, nor me but it exists because some like it and want it.

Choices.

Go down the paint aisle in B and Q. I'd never buy green emulsion for my living room but they sell it so somebody does.

Brilliant things, there's thread on here about a chap that used to run Defenders for hunting expeditions, he switched to G Wagons and never looked back.

Subjective stuff though - in a garish colour and bejeweled with tat I imagine they could look awful.

If I could only have one car it'd be a G500 4x4 squared in grey and with the side exit exhausts hidden.

What was it? A GLA is a totally different car. No way could you confuse it with a G Wagen.

I like Beemers, but when you get to the E63 wagon vs M5 wagon debate there's no contest.

AMG's have soul (and space) in spades.

However, I don't get G Wagons either, especially at what they cost.

I'm a huge fan of the G-Wagen. It's a vehicle built for a purpose (army) and designed aeons ago. I like that they're hand built in Austria and probably the most over-engineered vehicle on the planet.

They don't do corners and drink like an ocean liner. But so what.

Mega capable off road and reliable. In fact, a G55/G63 is absolutely in my 3 car garage. With a motocross bike hooked up at the rear.

3 miles to get to 95?

I know its not a rocket ship but a quick Google suggests 9.1 seconds 0-60.

That's not exactly slow for a car of its size.

Every chav and his dog can get their hands on an Range Rover/X5 or Cayene be it used or new, so the well to do drug dealer/chav about town think they have to set themselves apart from the herd, but then follow premiership footballers like sheep and buys a G wagon.

i personally love them but understand why their a bit love/hate.

G63 for me please. or the Brabus 700 6x6 smile

OP you sound incredibly sour by such a trivial thing mind you. its just a 4x4 which has selective taste, just like anything else on the road..Jeez.

Trying to figure out whether you spelled a type of gravy incorrectly or an Oxfordshire town.

Absolutely this.
You could ask the same about any of the Kahn/Twisted blinged Defenders. At least an AMG G-wagen has a semblance of class and is still as over engineered as anything on the planet.
The 6x6 variant is just awesome.

I'm another huge G Wagon fan, though I do cringe when I see the stupid chrome 22" wheels on them, or AMG body kits on them
hence why I dont have them on mine.
Equally I think the same when I see a Range Rover with low profile tyres, kind of what's the point.
But each to their own.
