I will be buying one next year hopefully. Love everything about them.

Each to their own.

I saw a terracotta red one from the 80s last week with a bit of filler on one of the wheelarches.

A lot of the functional GWs have been bought cheap and then blinged-up beyond belief. Sad.

I don't really get buying a new one if its a 350.

Either do the whole G wagon thing properly and get a G63 AMG and go cruising around Mayfair to show off, or otherwise buy a far superior luxury SUV and get a Range Rover vogue, or get a far superior performance SUV and get a cayenne turbo, want the original proper off-roader get a Jeep Wrangler.

The G350 at £80k or whatever they cost makes no sense to me. Not flashy enough to pose in, find me a 3l diesel that is!, and not good enough to warrant the price tag. Just a fashion item I guess, but really doesn't work as a fashion item when the G63 exists!

They Cayenne is slightly quicker (4.5 vs 5.4 0-100k) but what makes you think a Wrangler is any better off road than a G-Wagen? Or that a Range Rover is superior in any way than a fully specced G350?
I know which I'd rather take across the Sahara (and it isn't either of those two alternatives).

ML's & GL's have options for "Faux Bash Plates" according to the brochure ie plastic tat

The G has pukka metal bumpers, bash plates & proper diff locks all round & if one ask nicely you can have the option of a gun turret.

However sticking 22" inch Chromies on one is the gayest thing ever. I'd like a a full military spec one with added AMG go.

I absolutely loved my G500 and will have another. The engineering in them is incredible (especially compared to the Range Rover I had after it). The driving position is fantastic, the noise awesome and my V8 wasn't slow.

Bit odd being so upset by a car that you come onto a motoring forum and spout non-facts about it. What did you spend your £90k on that is better than the choice of the guy you saw in his G350?

They are fantastic cars. A real alternative to a Rangie Classic with the added bonus that you can buy as old or as new as you like.

The G55 is one of the all time great fun cars. You cannot drive it without laughing out loud. The 350 is perfect for people who don't like fun wink

If it was to be used every day then I think the 500 is the perfect choice. If I weren't indoctrinated into the world of Rangies then this would be the one I would have.

As for blinging them up, well, I don't think a pale skinned, Ginga would look anything but farcical in one but I prefer the unmolested look anyway but the option to do either just means it caters for an even wider audience and everyone I between.

Absolutely brilliant cars and always good to see one in the road.

I saw some dreadful G-thing in London yesterday. I'm assuming the owner was Iranian going by the badly spaced plate GW5 1RAN. It was also wrapped in a horrible metallic purple/pink. It ddi sound bloody amazing though.

The G-Wagen is probably the best and toughest 4x4 ever built without going into specialist vehicle territory.

G350 I seriously doubt is 5.4 0-100. That sounds more like G63. Either way, forget about the 0-100, the Cayenne Turbo is another world of performance to the G wagon, G63 or G350. The G wagon can barely go around corners!! It is the antithesis of a performance car, regardless of the 0-100, whereas the Cayenne is a highly accomplished performance vehicle.

Range Rover Vogue is another world of luxury, ever been in a G wagon? They are not the most plush of cabins, they are spartan / military! If you don't believe me just stop by your dealer or look at any reviews or comparison tests. Comparing the two to find the best luxury SUV would be like a joke review.

I'm not sure that the Jeep is better than the G-Wagen off-road, though I bet it is (!). My point was, that if you want the original off-roader / proper off-roader experience, then you can get the whole G wagon package, minus the russian arms dealer look, with the Jeep for 1/4 of the price.

I think the G wagon is only really best for posing in Mayfair or Rodeo Dr. But for that purpose it surely HAS to be the AMG version, so it doesn't really leave any rational reason at all to buy a new G350.

Just my thoughts. Someone's buying them, so I guess there must be some reason out there, though I'm not sure it's necessarily the most rational.

I love Range Rovers and the supercharged ones are a giggle.

But G Wagens are just fantastic. I'd be very happy with a G350 (although a V8 would be better, of course)

Why should speed or luxury be a prime concern when it comes to choosing a 4x4?

Because maybe that's important to the person buying the car? Why don't you tell me what 'should' be the prime concern when looking for a 4x4 that leads someone to think that a brand new £90k G350 is the way to go?

The G63... I get it, of course it's awesome and I bet it's an absolute blast. The G350 I do not understand.

Yes that 0-60 was the G-wagen. The Jeep Wrangler is an accomplished vehicle but it can't touch a standard G-wagen. The G comes with difflocks on all axles, has decent articulation, and superior build quality. The Wrangler is a fashion statement, which has a lot to do with them becoming a gay icon.
As I said in an earlier post, if I was crossing the Sahara a G350 would be high on my list of preferred vehicles.
If you've ever heard of Tom Sheppard he uses a G for that very purpose. He rates them very highly indeed for their reliability, economy and ability.

Fast SUVs are a waste of time as they become so compromised in doing what they were designed for you may as well have an Audi Quattro of some flavour and get the better handling..
