They've always been a luxurious car with a powerful engine not the stripped out racer that those with rose tinted glasses seem to remember.
Exactly. The M5's problem is weight. But they obviously couldn't care less.
Have you ever driven one?
Yes I have. Had one for the weekend two years ago. And there's no denying that it's a very quick machine but it feels heavy in the corners and certainly under braking, has an artificial, uninspiring soundtrack, too many driving modes and poor steering (feel). Interior wise it's also just a normal (though well equipped) 5 series. Again, very good, but just not special. Now I'm perfectly aware that this was also the case with the original E28 M5, but at least that had an interesting engine with the sound to match.

I'd rather have a normal (but still fast), well equipped 5-series that doesn't pretend to be anything special and a true sportscar next to it over something that is best, or in my eyes, worst of both worlds.

last I checked, everyone's opinion is equally valid regardless of 'garage'.

The 5 is the size it is, the performance version of each sector should be (IMO) designed and specced to suit, if all out luxury is required I'm confident BMW have that covered also.
M cars...where M standards for Motorsport.... now appear to try and cover all the bases, which ultimately (for me) end up succeeding in few, unless beaten, mashed and computer controlled and dictated as to make the driver more of a passenger who decides whether they want to ruin a set of tyres or waft serenly looking like an owner who appreciates motorsport.

hmm M for motorport dulled by weight?

Not too shabby for a 2000kg barge and we can all post figures......

Drive one and then come back and comment how heavy it is.

Is a BMW M5 pretending to be special?

Its just a model that is available in the 5 series lineup. People buy them, for the same reason people buy 520d's. Its a car that suits their requirements.

If you want a fast, luxurious 5 series, you buy a M5 - if you want an economical 5 series, you buy one of the diesels.

Why does it have to be more difficult than that?

Cars have got bigger and heavier - park an F10 next to a E34 and its plain to see.

My E34 is every bit as luxurious as the F10 - mine even has a a leather rear parcel shelf!

When looking for a fast family car my options were:

Merc E Class AMG - CLS was ruled out because only the shooting brake has the bench rear seat and I didn't want that.
Jaguar XF-R - Already had owned an XF-S and so wanted something different (interior the same).
Audi RS6 - No good deals were available at the time.
Audi RS4 - Had one previously and was disappointed with it.
New BMW M3 - Rear space not big enough for kids in baby seats.

I got the M5 because it ticked the boxes I was most interested in - sure some say the fake sound is silly - I don't even notice it TBH, other than that its a great everyday family car. Leave it in D2 - comfort suspension and steering, sport engine and its a great thing to drive.

If you want to go mad - engage full on sport + modes, MDM on and then you have a very fast car. Agree, its heavy, agree that after a while the brakes start to complain, but all BMWs (new and old) suffer from poor standard brakes..

Quickmoose's own car review.....

Quote from car magazine:

If you love the looks of the Alfa Brera – and many people do – you can finally just about justify buying one from an enthusiast's perspective. The 2.2 Brera S is a much much better car to drive than its ordinary equivalent. The visual enhancements work well, too, with Prodrive labeled stone deflectors, D-shaped tailpipes, S badges, and those gorgeous 19-inch alloys adding extra charm. The interior’s had a makeover too. We’re not so keen on the 3.2. It may be faster, it may sound better, but it really doesn’t drive as well... Shame.

At £24,950 for the 2.2 (£26,450 if you want the leather dashboard) and £28,450, the Alfa Brera S is decent value at only £1500 more than the regular car. The trouble is, buy one, and you still won’t see which way the accountant in the TT went…

Looks like you should have bought the 2.0L version.........

Now I don't remember ever seeing anyone say, I'll tell you what buy the 535D or any other model of F10 when comparing the entire family, the F10 M5 wins every time.

Still I'll wait to see you on Top Gear presenting with your vast knowledge based on a weekend drive of a car two years ago rolleyes

Firstly, facts right time, it wasn't me who had one for a weekend two years ago loser
Secondly I came on here to discuss the 30 year special edition M5, you have one of those? no.
Am I so retarded as to go through your garage and critique your choices ? no.

oh wait (checks garage)I see now... precious is offended...

I'm happy you're happy with your choice. For you and your needs it clearly does the trick, congratulations.
You don't need to justify it to me petal.

How would this M5 compare to its slightly bigger stablemate the M6gc in terms of performance and overall feel. Has anyone driven both?

However I'm not offended I'm laughing at the fact you clearly don't know what you're talking about laugh

I'd have more respect for your opinion if you'd actually sat in one and presse the go button, which.............you haven't.

Petal and precious........ah bless, he's trying to be funny.......

Errrr, we're not comparing 5 with 6 series, and your point is?

Do you understand the difference between the two models or shall I explain them in very short little words?

Err i was replying to the question asked by another or do I have explain how a discussion based forum works?

I'll finish on this thread with this, as opinions, it seems much like aholes, can often unintentionally offend the delicates out there, when presented in the wrong way...

This thread is about the BMW M5 30 Jahre.
When I see a bog standard F10 M5 I look and stare a little, it's a monster, it is special. I'm quite superficial that way (see my garage and related motoring hack judgements, but not EVOs because they prefer the v6 tongue out ) and I appreciate good looking (IMO) things, the standard F10 design, upon which the M5 pumps, I think, is an elegant return to form, especially from the rear three quarters. It does what it says it will do, the interior is lovely, it rides like BMWs kind of should - firm with intent.
Further to that though a car that it is prefixed with 'Motorsport' should have an eye on it's fat. I enjoyed my time with one, it made me laugh with it's extremes, it made me sad with it's properly naff engine noises, and the undeniable ravages that weight bestows on it...I enjoyed my time with a Rapide more...who cares

My original point:
A 30 year special edition at THAT price that does not come with all options specced ready to have some, none or all deleted is a joke IMO.

If a last word in response to my opinon, is required from you Ho, by all means, the floor is yours...

Think I'd take the E39 V8 model - a proper car, not one bloated with electronics for everything. I mean, a saloon of this type weighing nearly 2 tonnes? Needs to cut down on the pies.
The E39 weighs 1.8 tonnes.
laugh
People write so much st about these cars. When the E60 came out, plenty of people were bleating about its weights compared witht he E39. Here are the weights of all M5s:

E28 1550kg
E34 1750kg
E39 1826kg
E60 1855kg
F10 1945kg.

The greatest increase in bhp/tonne came with the E60.

What a graceful and well written post, after all that it seems that we share the same opinion after all smile

None of my comments were in relation to the 30 Jahre edition in which I have little interest, only my own experience of the standard F10 M5. Probably should have clarified that at the start but there you go, it's all good fun smile

Cheers,
Bryn.
