I've never found the M5 bland and boring, until this generation arrived.

Which one of the two would you rather have a serious crash in, out of interest?
Don't think it would make much difference.

Aye, looks fabulous.
For a mid-90s design that holds up extremely well, it got a 4* rating at a time when 5* were still 4-5 years away.

How did this even turn into a safety debate? Have I accidentally logged onto Autocar's forums? Are we going to have a critique about cupholder depths coming soon.
The E39 would fail the cup holder test, they're utterly useless lol.

So they basically upped the boost. Very Motorsport indeed.

What a shambles. M for Marketing.

Nice car, bar the one thing that has made it a vastly overpriced irrelevance for me.

1945KGS? Lardarse and at least 200 kgs too heavy. No M CAR should be hauling more weight than many people carriers.

True, but NCAP changed the tests in 2010, so you can't compare the results directly.

For 5* from 2010, the car needs "Overall good performance in crash protection. Well equipped with robust crash avoidance technology."
Biggest difference between the two is the 1* pedestrian protection on the earlier cars; now we have mattress bonnets to protect errant pedheads.

How did this turn into a safety debate? Because we are trying to avoid the review's finding that 600hp or not, the car is lacking dynamic finesse and is more of a we than a mistress.

so I pay £91k for the best M5 ever and then there are another 20k of options to add...even have to pay for sun protection, and automatic boot lid and rear cameras. This sort of thing is standard on most well speced ford Focus now.

I will never understand buying top spec model and trhen being told well its £20k more if yoyu actually want it to feel top spec.

Ferrari do this and I think to an extent each car is so unique I can see why, but BMW M5 they sell 20,000 of them and god knows how many 5 series etc which will have same parts etc.

Who gives a st about safety, it's not like we're talking about Trabants here is it?

For me the F10 comes bottom of the M5 pile in the desirability stakes, maybe it's because my everyday hack is an F10 520d which has tainted my appreciation.

Top of my M5 list would be an E34 3.8 followed by the bonkers E90 V10, then a tie between the E28 and E39 with the F10 bringing up the rear.

Have to agree with what many have posted. The least desirable of all the M5's IMO. BMW used to be the king of uber saloons but they've seriously lost their way lately.

Over £100k for an M5 is madness - I'm sure it would be a lot of fun though.

The 'generations' photo is very telling... The M5 gets better looking every time you step back a generation.

£113K as tested?

one sec....

Just had to check, that's more expensive than the Porsche Panamera 4.8 GTS. slightly higher up the brand cachet ladder.

Dear BMW, Art thoust mad?

I won't bother looking at comparing it against the Merc / Jag uber saloons as plot loss is pretty clear.

Marketing exercise, nothing to see here, move on.

Never mind Jags and Mercs, there have been high performance "business sedans" since cars were invented and the 20s and 30s were littered with them from all continents. Me thinks BMW is being their usual self hype believing selfs.

Never mind the blobby Porsche. It's £5k more expensive than the top of the range Quattroporte S Q4!

Whoever is wealthy enough to buy one of these is going to take an absolute bath on values I'd say. Can't see it being more than 60k in 2 years.
People take the piss out of people who lease but my friend is on his 2nd one of these now. He gets special rates working for BMW so is paying £570 a month!

Car value £84k

18month lease for him = £10,260

His last one sold 2nd hand via a BMW dealer for £46k

so by leasing saved himself £28k!

Very nice. All that power could be very addictive. But I take my old E39 M5 any time.
Just got to the office after a "spirited" 30 mile drive in my E39 M5. Whilst I love the idea of 600BHP and the 30 year special edition looks amazing, honestly, a fully lit E39's 400BHP is enough...I think i'll keep the 90k in the bank... Further (tempting fate) I have never felt uneasy about using its full potential as handling, stability (at the edge of my envelope) and brakes (with red stuff pads) has always been highly confidence inspiring.

OOF! serious BMW backlash starts/continues eh...other than the fact I find the F10 a very well resolved design, all else that has been said I agree with (oh apart from what would you rather crash in? really? (hehe: )
Heavy, characterless, andin relation to it's relations, it's poor. Pipe'd in engine noise ffs.

I do wonder how many of the oh-so predictable haters on here have actually driven one? I haven't personally, but on reports from plenty of people who have, it's a pretty serious bit of kit. Probably wouldn't pay £113K for one, but if I had £70k to spend on a car a standard one would be pretty near the top of the list.

All of these types of high end German masterpieces are far too good in every way for the UK.
