Except on track though, the elise won't be as fun on the road with its low polar moment of inertia (or am I wrong here?).

Will be interesting to see what the Fiat/Abarth version will be like, when it eventually gets released...

I imagine something that size and weight will be quite fun with a 180hp Garrett-turbocharged 4 up front smile

Erm - I had a really good look at one of these 2 weeks ago, someone parked-it-up near where I was sitting, enjoying the sun - we had a chat about it etc. etc.

I kinda liked it - it's less stodgy/chubby than the last one - assumed they were already available tbh...

2ltr with 160bhp? That's rather pathetic isn't it.
The one thing I always hope for on a car-enthusiast forum is that people realise the stats on a car generally reveal the sum-total of fk-all about a car...

I realise some people really struggle with the idea that there's more to life than numbers - number which prove things are better which is so much easier than forcing everyone in the world to take your view purely based on your willpower alone ;0

The other option would be to buy a £5k Mk1 MX5 and a £14k Caterham/Elise Mk1 and have the best of both!

Low depreciation, maximum fun. Relaxed and frenetic motoring! biggrin

Yes, but no warranty, creature comforts or low rate finance packages.

As has been said, apples and oranges.

oh maybe. Wonder what the real-world mpg would be of the 2 litre.
I got 34mpg in the 2.0-litre on a fairly fast run on Scottish A-roads. The 1.5-litre managed 38mpg. Not bad figures, I reckon.

Is this PH's?

The MX5 is fairly bullet proof. Creature comforts replaced with character and finance is always available.

Yes it is PH biggrin

Buyers of the new MX5 will use it as a daily driver that provides some fun so will need the refinements and aftercare.

Those choosing an older car will se it as a second car so those aspects are less important.

I ran a mk1. S-Spec for 6 months as a second car - it was too raw to use as a daily and (I think I had a bad one) too unreliable with a whole host of faults whilst I had it!

The new MX5 hardly looks pathetic here.

For 5 years I had a 160bhp mx5 and a 160bhp Elise and they shared daily driver duties. The Elise was more fun on the road. The MX5 was more sideways more often, but there is more to driving enjoyment than slide angle.

That said the Elise on winter tyres is as sideways as the MX5 ever was, and very friendly and controllable about it.

In terms of reliability both only failed to get me where I was going once (ignoring the time the MX5 caught fire because that was more my fault than the Mazda's). Very closely matched cars for dull stuff like practicality.

Mid 40's without trying & if you can get less than 33 on the road you then you should win a prize. I have to say its quite a surprise.

This was on the cruise for that distance

Nice to see but the guy who is wanting £1000 over list for the car must know something about an Indian Summer. The 2.0 is basically now sold out until the end of November, so with the sun probably not shining is it worth paying the extra grand for maybe one month of roof off action? Or just order one from the factory for January 2016 instead?

And talking about the roof, what no one seems to mention (including road testers.) is that the centre section of the roof is an aluminium sheet wrapped in fabric. Therefore when the roof is up, the part between the top of the windscreen and just behind the top of your head, is actually a 'hardtop'. The only part of the roof that is a 'soft top' is the section around the glass rear window. As for the electric hardtop version, there has been no estimated date of production announced for it.

Sorry can't get too excited about the mx5 I somehow miss the point , give me a lotus Elise anyday !
I think the point is that the mx5 starts at £18,495 where as the elise starts at £28,895 (at least according to the Top Gear mag im flicking through)
Why would any one who isn't a hairdresser care about either.

yes I know, but it seems fair game on ph to be outrageously stereotypical about certain marks so I thought I'd join in. My main daily is a Peugeot.

Yes I guess your right traditionally they were hairdressers cars but they must be doing well to be able to buy one of these cars ! I also believe that the mx5 must offer some sort of driving experience as a lot of people rave about how good they are , not for me though , what would you plump for , a used lotus or a new mx5 ?? Or something completely different for your cash ?
