BMW M5: Pic Of The Week

We've talked a lot about BMW M5s this week - here's a desktop pic of our favourites!

BMW's M5 has been much-discussed this week, Dan's drive of the 30 Jahre version of the new one causing a bit of soul searching. Here for our Pic Of The Week are the cars that predated it and set the standard for one of the defining M cars and, indeed, a vehicle that still sets the super saloon standard.

Which is your favourite? Have your say and enjoy some hearty Bavarian goodness for your new desktop wallpaper!

All very very nice. Always wondered why BMW's own E34 M5 (as shown in the pic) has clear turn signals, these look factory but were always aftermarket on the E34.

Generation 1, 2 and 3. That carbon black E39 does it for me...its perfect and has aged well...in fact it still looks pretty modern. The E60 looks bulky; however, that engine must be phenomenal.

As an E34 owner, it's still got to be the E28. And to think it nearly didn't come into being...

Owning a V10 BMW is one of the most frustrating and rewarding motoring experiences one can have.

I had an M6 V10 for 18 months. When it was working well it was just the best thing ever. When it wasnt and threw a hissy fit and didnt work properly I felt like torching it.

E28, E39, E34, E60.

I've had an E39, getting another. Could have and should have bought an E34 when I had the chance - 3.6 version at £4k with 100k miles on it back in 2008..

I love the fact that they are all (the first four generations anyway) loved, as evidenced by different people having different favourites. I'll raise a (biased) hand for the E39.

V10.....I think I need to sell the 996tt (which may be at the top of its curve), and buy the v10 (which may be at the bottom of its curve). Good luck to all that feel piston heads is not about money considerations when buying cars.
