Don't care how good it is, I couldnt spend £32k plus on a golf. For £32k I want drama, I don't want to see another one on the road every week let alone every day.

I want to be able to start it up and have a little giggle as the engine growls into life and get excited about what's to come.

I want to be able to feel excited even when I'm just pottering about. I want to park it up and take 2 to 3 look backs, I want to want to find a parking space that allows me to gaze over at it through the window whilst having my pub lunch.

The golf wouldn't make me do any of these. The person who said he'd rather have a dull 4 cylinder engine that does 0-60 in 4.6 secs rather than a loud v6 that does it on 6 secs is the perfect candidate for a 'white goods' golf.

There again I drive an alfa, which I'm sure folk that buy the golf r wouldn't touch with a barge pole. Too much to go wrong, too many flaws but that's what I love about it. It's not perfect by a long stretch but I do love it and they will never say that about their golf.
You were doing really well until you said you drive an Alfa. Unless it's an 8C or one of the lovely classic spiders or a GT Junior etc then there's owt that special about a modern Alfa. And yes, I have owned one.

Doesn't matter how good it is. Certain posters on PH will hate it regardless. Better to listen to the actual reviews tbh.
Or you could just drive it and make your own mind (possibly)?

I am not convinced you have though, never mind buying one, or 7 wink. You really need to so that you can get it out of your system and stop coming up with trolling attempts as puerile/obvious as the "haters".

It really is a great car but not a beast. If you've ever driven a sports car you would know it's quite tame in comparison.

Nobody mocks the R beast frog man, nobody.

Edited to add - it's haterz with a z, duh!

6k miles in now and loving them all... great mix of real world performance in a comfortable and practical everyday package.

Had a look at the new RS3 the other day by chance and thought, ooo maybe one of those next, though £20k more than the R - then I watched this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3jWVTKYcP0

very interesting that though the RS3 is the 'better' VAG product it is beaten by its VW alternative! £20k saved!
Save a bit more money and go for a Cupra:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5dRujiHbpA

These tests are a bit specific, they just compare performance on a specific track under a specific set of conditions which may or may not suit the characteristics of one of the cars under test. eg. Dry track negates a lot of the advantages of AWD and having only FWD means less weight which helps cornering which probably helped the Cupra beat the Golf on that track in those conditions. I think the unfavourable weight distrubution caused by the 2.5ltr engine in the RS3 didn't help vs the Golf on the track they tested it on - were there more long straights vs tight corners the result might have been different.

For what it's worth, I've got a Golf R on order. As another poster in this thread said, I like it for many of the reasons being cited here to slag it off. Relatively 'normal' looks appeal to me, extreme competence as a daily driver doing dull everyday tasks is a major plus point, being easy to extract performance from is also a good thing for what is going to be my one and only car IMO.

Obviously, if I had had the same amount of cash to spend purely on a fun weekend toy, the Golf probably wouldn't have been top of the list but as an all-purpose car there isn't much to challenge it IMO.

Love my R mk7 ,puts a smile on my face, every day that I've owned it - a year now and 11500 miles, in all winds and weathers.
Cracking 4 pot ,whether in ECO mode or Race. Never misses a beat. Oh! and also returns average of 35 plus mpg.
Pretty good in my experience. Eat your HEART out, Audi RS3 MK3 owners - £10 k the poorer! (5 pot)

Just swapped wife's year old R for RSQ3 and very happy with Q3 . Lost £5k on the golf but pleased to be rid of it and can't think what residuals will be like when market flooded by all the cheap lease deal R's being returned when they are 2 years old.

So who wanted rid of it ,you or the missus? Why - what was wrong with it for you?

Replacement is a total different market place - RSQ3 reviews were pretty crap I seem to recall. Just watch the depreciation on that.

Porsche Mecan S would have been a far better buy ,if you could of got one!

Sounds like you changed your actual requirement in her use of her car.

Good example of the depreciation you can expect, no matter what the spec I would guess.

35 examples for sale on the Audi used website - are they shift?

why do you get two or three copies of any posts on this forum? Anyway regarding the RSQ3 my wife loves it so do I . Predicted residuals for RS Q3 are actually pretty good and probably class leading. feels much more special and refined than the golf R and has decent sound system . Get the feeling they haven't sold many RSQ3s in UK so maybe residuals will be pretty good.
Agree I would've gone for the Macan but you can't buy a 10 month old one for only 34,000 And cheapest model is only a 2 L turbo .
