I've found a number I like and I want to register it. It's only a basic one, nothing fancy.

I get the feeling from looking at the various websites that there must be a cheap way and a more expensive way of getting a private reg depending on who you use?

So anyone know the cheapest route? Can you even go direct to the DVLA or do they charge more than the private companies?

Depends who own it.

If it is a new reg... DVLA will have it.... unless it has been bought by a private company.

Does the private company price include the £80 transfer fee? I think this is included in the DVLA price.

This.

If the same plate is available in both places it will be cheaper on DVLA.

Agreed - if it isn't then the company selling it will go bust fairly quickly because they'll be making a loss

yep, checked what happens if you try to buy the plate through reg-transfers and they add on the £80 on top of the initial quote. So DVLA is cheaper.

I still think it's too expensive even through the DVLA? What are you paying the money for? There must be a company out there somewhere who offer a better rate?

There isn't unfortunately (AFAIK anyway!) And I think you're also only paying to effectively borrow the plate as if you miss-use it, i.e mis-space the characters and get caught a couple times I believe they can revoke your rights to the plate!

Depending on the price of the plate it often isn't the dearest part of it! It the transfers each time you change car! Ive has mine on 4 cars with a few months on retention and that has cost me more than the purchase price!

In this case it is the model of the car and it's already perfect with the legally correct spacing. It's not one of those wky ones which is trying to spell something using numbers... lol.

And of course, as it's for the model of the car it will go with the car when I sell it.

A stylish name. Clearly the sort of erudite gent who would have a private plate. biggrin

Define "cheap".

  • A £500 plate from DVLA is likley to be worth 50p if you want to sell it.
  • A £1,000 plate from ebay is likely to be worth at least £750 even for a quick sale.
Which is cheaper?

Buy a cheap old car which has a non-dating plate which is removable.

Put the plate on retention, now a fixed price of £80 for 10 years.

Sell cheap old car for same or more than you bought it.

FREE private plate.

Wouldn't you have to re-register the car to sell it?
