Yawn.

Down to iPad, not me.

Yes, that particular Ferrari has been wrapped to get attention, but the underclass cannot afford such cars.

Surprised the old bill don't have a crackdown. Given the number of gash plates on here they could raise a fortune for their coffers
They could but they won't. The sale of Cherished/Vanity/Chav/C124PPY plates has raised some 2 Billion for the Treasury since it all kicked off in the late 80's, and judging by the relentless parade of the wretched things here in the Essex Badlands many of those have bought specifically to be displayed illegally. That's the reality - it's all about money and nothing will be done to compromise that income stream. And even if Plod did have a go, can you just imagine the mouthful of hostility and abuse and attitude they'll get on a tug from anybody either ignorant enough to not know what the law is or arrogant enough to think the law doesn't apply to them by displaying an illegal plate in the first place?

Nope, the solution is to take the positives. Illegal plates are a useful indication you're sharing road space with a vain egotist who is proudly displaying his or her lack of respect for the law and in order to do that they've handed a pile of cash to the Treasury which by a tiny, tiny bit has eased the burden of taxation on everyone else untroubled by the urge to show off and break the law.

Personally don't have a problem with them (and agree with a lot of your points above!) but what I'd like to know is if a plate has been deliberately hacked with 'screw caps', masking tape to sharpen corners on numbers etc then do they still get picked up by cameras ?

That particularly badly wrapped and hideously coloured 458 is a prime example of the said 'underclass' possibly 'owning' and ruining such cars and further confirmed by the illegal chavplate.

I've no idea. You could argue that if a plate can be read by a camera it doesn't matter if it's legally formatted or not, but that's not dealing with the underlying fk the law attitude that causes the illegal plate in the first place which is way more of a big deal than a couple of strategically placed screwcaps or an illegal spacing or font.

There's loads of legally formatted plates I see in The Badlands that are deliberately partially obscured by bull bars or tow hooks or bike racks for example, or they've been purposefully left dirty on a otherwise spotless car or had a heavy tint or very glossy film applied or perhaps removed all together and shoved on the dash board with half the number rendered invisible behind the wiper blade.

In every case you have to ask yourself what these 'tards are up too and why exactly don't they want their vehicle readily and easily identified?

Class is not the same thing as money. You'd only need a 2 minute conversation with your average Premier League footballist or bleedin' Lot-tree wiiinnnah to confirm that.

Class is about education. The better educated you are the more respect you'll have for the tremendous power of the English language and the more respect for the power of the English language you have the less likely it is you'll even contemplate spelling anything on a numberplate or anything else for that matter using a combination of numbers and letters.

Doing that is actually below a 6 year olds English remedial class level. Anyone of the kids in that class could tell you straight away that numbers aren't the same thing as letters and you really can't spell anything with them.

I'd like to think they flag up as "unreadable plate" and get stuck in a pile for some manual investigation - someone tries to figure out what it should be, then flags it for further attention. Maybe not a visit, but a thing to be watched out for. Realistically it probably doesn't happen, though.

Here's a candidate from a FB photo about a local car show:

A gentrified old dear around here has a 1993 325i Coupe E36, Calypso red with a couple of scabs and a gouge down the side. The number plate is D58 (I think) - that's haw you do it, but the monied underbelly wouldn't understand.
