Is there a system to it?
I`ve no idea tbh!!
Back here after a while and happy to help :-)
This is the current IOM series. The suffix letter is not age related; the MN is fixed, the series started with BMN 1 A, then after 999 it went to BMN 1 B, up to Y; then CMN 1 A and onwards...this started in 1987 and wont be exhausted while cars still have drivers.
Previously IOM has had a number of other variations, starting with MN #, MAN #, reverses, and MAN with a non-age related suffix and then prefix letter. IOM plates, like those in Guernsey and Jersey, cannot be transferred to mainland vehicles.

I saw a bad one today on a Lexus RX 450h. L3XJG, but spaced as [ L3X JG ].
There was actually room for 3 or 4 characters between L3X and JG. Poor form from the Japanese Mercedes.

S3XY'S on an Audi or BMW. The plate was actually S3 XVS with the V capped at the bottom to try to look like a "Y" and a black fixing cap at the top to create an apostrophe.

From Fast Ford mag this month:

Audi driver indicating? Rare.
No, no just the brake light. The Indicator-pack was a £500 optional extra on Audis that the owners just didn't deem necessary.

But they did go for the automatic parking gismo, (on yellow lines and disabled spaces.)

A couple of girly ones this morning, first a Land Rover Defender wearing JE55E JO, then shortly after a Mini with K 5OFY.
