Well played OP, I think you're doing the right thing. Might be worth mentioning it to the neighbour though, maybe asking that their child doesn't get so close to the car next time.

Weird reading some of the stories here, especially that lady putting a box on someone else's car. I don't know how people find it justifiable to even touch someone else's property, even if it is "just a car". It really does anger me hearing stories like that, what an arrogant bimbo.

I had a look on Google when this thread was first posted, and the impression I got was that CoolHands is correct. A parent is only liable if they are negligent.

e.g.

I agree that that is the case, but realisticaly in a damage case I think that the parent usually pays

Not sure that comes into it necessarily.

My neighbour has accidentally scuffed my motorcycle moving in and out of her space but I won't mention it because

1. She's a good neighbour always ready to help and has a cheery smile and wave for everyone.

2. She's fit. biggrin
You need to tell her about the danage and tell she'll have to pay...by ass.

i think i could make a killing, starting a business where i pick up people's new cars direct from the factory, load them into a container so they can be shipped to a secure location, and permanently stored while the owners rent a £1k shed from me
The container comment reminds me of a guy featured on our local (NW) news who lived in Liverpool and had a Merc convertible jammed in his little garage that had done about 300 miles in a year as he was terrified of taking it anywhere.

It's certainly the decent thing to do.

many years ago
a kid we used to babysit for, rode his bike into next doors car, his mum said she would get it sorted,

she bought a can of ford red (any red apparently) and blathered it down the side of the car,

it looked terrible, no idea what happend after, she was an attractive single mum, so???

Only if the parents are decent though. Otherwise it'll be a mumbled "yeah sorry mate" followed by a closed door.

I seem to be pretty unlucky when it comes to new cars. I always park in the emptiest spot in car parks and I valet my car every week yet I always seem to end up with a dent or ding early on in my ownership.

My M135i lasted a few weeks before a stone bounced up from a lorry and chipped the windscreen. After that, my Abarth was dented by someone's door in a car park two months into my ownership and today, the little girl next door fell against my 3 month old Volvo whilst on her bike leaving a 2 inch scratch under my fuel cap which is through to the primer.

These things happen but God it's annoying. As stupid as this sounds, I don't have the same motivation to keep it pristine as I know it's been damaged - damn OCD!

Anyone have any similar tales?
My dad bought a Seat Alhambra brand new in the late 90's. Got a stone chip in the windscreen in the first week of having it. Despite intending to get it fixed, the chip was still there when he traded it in 10 years later.

Why bother whinging on here then if you're too supine to request the neighbour pay the damage? It's hardly an unreasonable request. If the relationship is as good as you say then it won't be an issue.

I presume the post is a wind up anyway - if he's parked on the pavement he can hardly complain about a child knocking into it. On a separate note is a parent liable for something a child does if they have not been negligent? I don't think so.

well I don't know. I just thought complaining your car got scratched and then saying it was parked half up on the pavement was a good way to entice readers to get all high & mighty.

What a nasty place PH has become.
I've not bothered reading past page 1 as I suspect it'll be more of the same. You have my sympathies OP.

Fair play to the OP - too much 'blame culture' nowadays (PH prevalent evidence) and you have acknowledged that it was genuinely an accident.

I used to be very protective of my cars (now drive a company car) so appreciate your frustration. I'm also now a parent too, and would want to know if my child had done something deliberately to damage someones' property / belongings.

Perhaps tell the parent about what happened but be keen to point out that you will fix it and don't expect anything - it might prompt a kind gesture / apology from the little girl who will take more care in the future. Right now, a clumsy incident has not had any consequence...

Seeking compensation is very PH nowadays!

Why was my post nasty? It was a legitimate question.

Remind me to crash into your car and then refuse to pay for the damage. Presumably, you'll just smile and move on so as to avoid being 'nasty'.

Nah. Thought not.

well sorry dude, didn't think I was that rude. Still vaguely interested in strict liability as to whether parents are liable but I don't suppose we'll get a definitive answer.

Apparently there was a forum cull in 2005 Martin, looks like we need another.

Rise above the pish that you have received on here, ignoring them is best.
