I hate the iPad glued to the dashboard look that a lot of new cars have.

yes

Seems like they forgot to make a space for a screen, the AMG GT(?) would be a nice interior otherwise.

Well how about comparing apples with apples for a kick off, the current SL dash, not at all boring in my opinion;

It's typical 300BHP trolling pick 2 extremes to suit your argument.
They must have got a job lot of buttons....
And the satnav and vents aren't in line with the centre console which would drive me nuts. I hate the modern trend for individual cowls around the dials. Look terrible at any angle other than straight on. Much preferred the old style multiple dials under a single clear screen.

Simple - black plastic is cheaper and doesn't fade in sunlight.

I've never really understood why it's deemed acceptable to have bare plastic showing in the interior of a "premium" car, let alone having most of the surfaces made of plastic. You wouldn't want half of the interior of your house made out of plain black plastic, so why is it acceptable in a car?

Surely age (of the people, not the cars) has a lot to do with it.

Im young(ish) and to me those old cars just look old. Id much rather be sat in a comfortable modern car with lots of toys than a basic old thing. For example, Id rather a new common Mondeo over those older, rare high end cars. Just because I couldn't sit there behind that old fashioned styling and be happy.

Id love an old American muscle car at some point, but it'd have to be modernised for me.

All IMO of course, and I'm sure there are plenty of people my age that like that old stuff.

I don't think anyone is saying that the older cars are actually better inside, just that they're more interestingly styled.

This affect seems fairly universal across almost all makes, models and from every country. Most modern interiors on the whole are bilge...

dull, dank, dingy boring affairs that are obviously designed to make you fall asleep should you look at them for more than 20 seconds.

It wasn't always this way. Ok, there are a few modern cars this might not apply too, but on the whole unless you looking at a Bentley or a Ferrari it is true.

Interiors used to be fun, interesting, cool and entertaining or just sumptuous. Now it's just a sea of grey and black plastic and pretty much the same basic dash shape in most cars, with no personality.

Example.

What an awesome looking interior!!

That first Mercedes interior (2nd pic) is, to my mind superb and defeats the point of your argument.

+1 looks like they copied and pasted parts from the entire german car catalogue.

Am I the only person who'd rather have a button for each function rather than a menu or touch screen controlling everything?

No doubt the dashes and steering wheels are designed to meet safety requirements, but why is the rest of the interior so often dingy and depressing and does anyone actually choose a black headlining or just have it thrust on them? My car has a black leather interior which I hate, yet I've seen silver BMWs with burgundy upholstery and modern Jaguars in dark metallics with cream interiors and they look stunning. As for white Alfa Romeos with tan upholstery, an unbeatable combination; I lust after one.

Simplicity and elegance seem to be ignored in favour of lots of toys and lights.

The Focus interior is one of the ugliest things that I have ever seen.

Porsche interiors also get less classy with each generation. 993 is basic and gorgeous; 996 is probably slightly more attractive than the 997; and the 991 is Audi-like tat with no quality to it at all.

Mercedes are also big offenders. The current C Class interior looks like it was designed by a drunken 20 year old. BMW interiors lack quality but are at least relatively simple and obviously aimed at ergonomics.

Got to disagree re Porsche interior, the 996 was bloody awful inside and hasn't aged well, whereas I think the 991 interior is lovely and quite understated as far as modern interiors go and a vast step up in quality from the 997

I think one could use that comment for most elements of modern British society, not just cars.

For me there's a tipping point - if you have to take your eyes off the road to find a button, then there are too many.

You're wrong smile The 991 scores highly for Audi plastics but the leather is thin and the dash is cluttered and far to 'try hard' for a Porsche.

The 996 interior is a masterclass is utilitarian elegance.

Ultimately, it's all a matter of taste. But quality is to some extent objective, and the 991 is definitely not made of better quality materials.

If you have to take your eyes off the road to find a button, you'll definitely have to do so to find the same function in a menu. I find it far easier to learn to find buttons by touch than to learn to navigate a menu blind.
