The 996/986 interior, for all its 90s aesthetic criticism, wears extremely well. It certainly isnt as plush as the 997 but its so hardwearing it looks far better than the era-equivalent BMW or Audi.
No it really doesn't, for starters it looks like they designed the dashboard, put it into production made 100 of them before someone realised that they hadn't designed clocks, and had nowhere to mount them so just got a hot glue gun out and stuck some on top, honestly it looks like it should have a Subaru badge on the wheel

era equivalent BMW E39, you want to tell me that the Porsche interior above looks far better than this?

I like Porsche interiors as they work extremely well - that said the E39 for me is one of the high points of car design in the last 50 years, inside, outside and dynamically - such a 'right' car with the M5 being sublime.

I had this interior in my Cayman S (minus the phone!) with all the leather bits specced and it was lovely. I always appreciated it and after 7 years it still looked like new pretty much.

That's the key with interiors - get rid of as much of the plastic as you can and replace it with leather or Alcantara. Most premium cars then look and feel quite nice.

I don't think anyone is saying that the older cars are actually better inside, just that they're more interestingly styled.
Exactly. smile

When speccing my current company car, I deliberately went for a light interior to avoid sitting in a coal bunker.

14 months on, it's wearing well, I just give a wipe down with leather conditioner every couple of months to remove any dirty spots.

Went for contrast with the exterior too....

Christ, had the wife been driving it before you took the picture?;)

Have ford ever managed to design a pleasant interior?

I can't recall one.

The lowest point was surely the mk1 focus, especially in ghia trim with the nasty faux wood centre console. Eugh.
Mk 4 Cortina a big step down from the Mk3 design wise. 60's/70's interiors to me were far more interesting than 80's one's.

Modern to me = too clinical & devoid of character. You can look and look away again and not have missed much.

Old = warm and welcoming with a certain charm that will keep your attention as your eyes find new things to admire.
I admit I'm a huge fan of proper wood and leather.

But there are some nice interiors out there, for me it's about not being boring and little interesting nuances.

I think Lotus have continually delivered nice looking interiors.

But some old cars have a far more 'modernistic' look to them. And they look friggin awesome too!!!

As an Impreza owner, I completely agree. "Does the job" is about the best description you can apply to it and the Porsche interior.
I've never sat in a classic, but have to say my hawkeye interior looks much older than the car is.

Au contraire - I much prefer the modern interior; I find it much more cohesive and easy on the eye. No, I know that's not the definition of fun, interesting, cool and entertaining but it's where I would prefer to be.

(Disclaimer - personal taste, subjective view, YMMV, etc)

PS are the photos of the earlier vehicles of Cherokees? The modern interior is the current Wrangler which is a different class of vehicle altogether and not representative of the up-market Jeeps.

This is the point I made earlier though. Why should you need to spend £5k+ on a "premium" car to make it look nice inside?

Well how about comparing apples with apples for a kick off, the current SL dash, not at all boring in my opinion;

It's not exactly boring, but my god what a complete pigs breakfast of a dash yikes

If I saw that on a luxury Chinese car I wouldn't be too surprised, but for a premium German marque that is piss poor.

The one were every part is a shade of grey or silver, and has an iPad randomly stuck to the middle of the dash? Clearly it appeals to a certain mentality, but it looks absolutely gash to me.

Do they change colour as you go faster?
You need a remapped diesel for that, and it only works for observers outside the car.

no st...and it is bettered by the second newer Merc pic. hence.... defeats the point of your argument. not relevant whether the poster knew the first car was a Merc or not.

My very old SL had a st interior. My later C class had a nicer interior.

I considered a 355 before buying the 430. 355 interior is dull by comparison.

I had a 996. Interior was pretty awful. 997 improved it and the 991 is fabulous.

I tell you what is not dull, a Cerbera interior!
