In autocar this week there was a few lines saying how some of Jaguars F-Type customers had complained that the noise coming out the back is 'too loud'. rolleyes
The 16MY onwards are a bit quieter on start up, due to complaints from customers.

Always a risk of "winning" generic customers from German brands smile

I was at a promotional night at the local dealer a few years back where Peter Leak was up talking and they rolled out the XKR-S etc. At the chit chat bit some target aged couple walked up and asked why don't Jaguar bring out a "Quattro". I interrupted and suggested they just learn how to drive biggrin

Not being able to turn off the pops and bangs does strike me as a bit odd. Even people who like them (which certainly doesn't include me) must be able to see the value in having a "quiet mode"?

Whereas Jaguar attracts young car enthusiasts?

spin

If you actually did interrupt strangers to insult them, you're a bit of a nob.

Prob jag on this one, like the looks and love tail out handling. Porsche is alright looking and would expect its fantastic on the right roads at the right time.

Not for me though at 100K, last porsche i drove was a 996 GT3 RS and it was alright. The owner was a bit of a pussy so barely felt like i stretched its legs really.. Bet on a track it would be nice but would rather have the Jag and get a dedicated track car instead.

p.s. Not to say that your opinion wasnt right. I dont understand why people have suddenly decided that a RWD car is a death trap in drizzle! I always roll my eyes when I read about an AWD car being usable all year as though your FE-RWD car will spontaneously explode if it touches standing water. Getting a modern BMW to become remotely dodgy in heavy rain requires quite a lot of stupidity, and it's practically impossible to run out of grip in a Porsche even in the wet unless you are risking your licence or doing it deliberately (e.g. stamping on the accelerator in a 2nd gear bend).

V6S for me sat on nice black 20" wheels, sports seats and driven with the exhaust scaring children and animals all day long. Oh hang on, I did that this morning wink

Porsche just bore me. I appreciate them (if I DO ever notice one blending in amongst the golfs and other white goods) but I'll leave it there.

JAG... for the way it looks (gorgeous) and oooohhh THAT noise !. if you want the ultimate drivers car you would save up for a GT3 I guess... but for every day pleasure - JAG F-Type. Porsche is just to Cliché.

I am sorry to single you out, mate, but this is typical PH. You say that the Jag is the "ultimate driver's car" and mark the 911 in that regard because it is "cliche". What on Earth has being popular got to do with whether or not a car is a good driver's car?

If every other car was a 997 GT3 4.0 RS or a Lotus or a 458 S, it would still be an awesome driver's car.

A lot of opinions on here seem to have a lotto do with image and the perceptions of strangers and not much to do with driving cars for the drive and not to look cool or stand out.

Love 911's but agree serious money now at £100k+. When F-Type was launched it was criticised for being over priced but seems to fill a clear gap in market place between Boxster/Cayman and 911.

It's a good strategy. I am not sure how you can justify the extra cost over a Cayman, but it's well pitched against the 911.

the V8 i drove did indeed have a specific button just to make it loud or quiet....dont think the V6 did but i dont remember it being that loud at sensible rpm

I think that the F-Type is a looker and good to drive but a 911 of any sort is more capable on a demanding road but it really depends what the driver is expecting and how much he is committed to spirited driving.

I don't know how much the coupé transition improved the F-Type dynamics, the only one I drove was a V6 spider in the more powerful form and with automatic transmission. Really beautiful, exciting and fast but over the twisty hill roads I like the most I could make a long list of cars I enjoyed more, like latest Boxter S, V8 Vantage, 997s and E92 M3.

The 911 consistently spanks much more powerful cars in drag races, let alone on track. But keep plugging for the British car and pretend it's objective.

The F-Type is overpriced and grossly overweight when compared to the Porsche 2-seater. A full 300kg heavier than a Cayman! That's shocking. Probably why the Cayman is consistently much faster on track (if that matters) and by far the more resolved and balanced driver's car.

The anti-Porsche nonsense on this site is astonishing at times. Sure, you can dislike the best mainstream sports/GT marque, but to pretend its cars are anything short of excellence is laughable. Only on PH is it 'herd mentality' to buy the best car in its class. Here's an idea: maybe people buy cars because they like them rather than worrying about trying to be different and cool.

I bet you buy Cava for a celebration just to avoid Champagne (too obvious a choice) and avoid all Apple products (too obvious a choice / herd mentality).

I would love British cars not to be fairly st, but they still are in this category.
Could not write it better myself beer
BUT, this is about the F-Type vs 911, not the Cayman which you brought into the equation. So on the basis of what figures Phead's have given, the Jag is only 142KG heavier than the Porsche, that's less than have than the 300KG you are spouting. So is the 911 grossly overweight?

My view on this is that yes, the 911 is the 'better' car, but I would as sure hope so given the price difference here, however, V8S or 911 or V6 F-Type vs Cayman, I'd choose the Jag everytime just becuase of the sound it makes, particularly the V6.

The only car I've driven out of the ones mentioned is the Cayman in 'S' trim. Yes it was good, very good, but I would never buy one. It doesn't excite me and the gear ratios are just ridiculous.

If they are both being measured as GTs then the 911 has to be the favourite, if only because I don't think you'd be able to fit two peoples' bags with two days' worth of clothes, etc. in the Jag (unless you were both blokes). I have a 993 and the back seats are used fairly regularly for suit cases.

Practicalities of luggage space aside, I think the Jag is far more interesting as a daily drive and I'd definitely have one over the GTS if the Mrs had a car which was interesting and had suitable load space.

The 911 is very light for what it is. It manages to have two more seats and still be about 250kg lighter than the Jag.

The V6 S weighed by Autocar came in at 1,755kg. The F-Type is a proper lardo. Heavier than a bloody 3 Series Touring!

Put an aftermarket exhaust on a Cayman and it would make all the silly farts and pops you want, as well as having a genuine induction roar (which a forced induction engine has to fake).
