Kind of another what car thread, but basically I have a 135i but I have done nearly 10k miles in 4 months because suddenly my work has me travelling to meetings 3-4 times a week!
fuel is not really an issue as it's covered etc so that side of things it's fine I just don't want a high mileage car in a year or 2 where most of those miles are 50mph average speed or traffic.

A friend offered me an x reg civic 1.6 for free that needs new rear brakes, and a sensor great that'll do! Except insurance is 800+ and tax is 250! That's more to insure than the BMW with 3x the power and 25x the value!

I can't mirror ncb until I turn 25, so my question is what's a good, reliable, modern (as can be), and hopefully cheaper to insure!
Budget wise I don't really want to spend more than £1000 unless it's truly great at this task.
The appeal of the Honda is it's free but I would rather spend more on the car and have cheaper insurance than pay 800 to insure a car that's maybe worth £300.
Looked at Saab 9-3 and mondeo but thought I'd see if anyone has any advice.
Something like a 9-3 1.9tid would be ideal. The civic is very ugly.

Use a comparison site and get some quotes on cars you like the look of. Try left-field stuff that people your age would usually turn their noses up at.

Are you sure your company will still pay your mileage if you are using a cheap old car to visit customers? There are often clauses saying "under x years old" in contracts so double check.

Volvo S40? its comfy for the miles and the typical owner dynamic should make insurance affordable (as long as you're not in London, Slough, Bradford or Luton)

Didn't they do one with an old 1.9 tractor engine for extra MPG's? Other than that i'd say Peugeot 306/406 HFi

If you go for a multicar policy then sometimes the insurance co will mirror the NCD on the second car. They did with my insurance.
