So recently I purchased a 05 VW Touareg 3.0 tdi (130k) and was wondering if it was worthwhile getting it chipped? We are looking at a £400 cost.

I think a power upgrade would be nice, although I don't want to destroy my autobox. I am only towing motorbikes with it and perhaps a track car. The main requirement is the MPG benifit to an already pretty frugal (for what it is) 3.0 diesel.

If it feels under powered then yes, if not I wouldn't bother.

They already have a reputation for being fragile and expensive to fix. I wouldn't want to risk it myself.

The Touareg. It isn't just the engine that has to take the increased power it is everything else attached to it as well.

Well I dont feel like I have shortage of power and I dont drive it in a sporting manner unless keeping momentum at low revs is a sport. However I am thinking of MPG and efficiency.

Maybe I should leave well alone. Its already a good package. I am unaware of them being fragile, my mechanic buddy seems to rate the powerplant, which is shared with the Q7 and other VAG models.

I had my Volvo remapped at Shark performance, nearly 3 years in and it's been faultless. It went from 163 to 225bhp and I average 44mpg.

They do not advertise improved economy, as you find when the car is more powerful you may drive it harder.

But I have had a new clutch, DMF and slave cylinder put in the car. This was not due to the remap but a leaking slave cylinder. So whilst it was out I replaced the lot.

Also whilst you are there and if it is the DPF engine, get it removed ( if it will still pass MOT) as this will save on fuel.

My car was transformed with the map, amazing what they can do with a laptop!

£339 (think I got your model correct). ~40bhp, ~80NM. Plug & Play.

How many miles do you do? Going to take quite a while to earn back £400 for the remap by saving 1 to 2 mpg.

I liked the look of a box from them rather than getting the car remapped, but they have quite a lot of negative reports on their facebook page ?

I had my 3.0Tdi A8 (2004 D3 model) remapped. About a 55bhp increase and you really notice it. Average increase in MPG with steady driving has netted me a 5-6 MPG improvement. I've done about 70k miles since doing it with no side affects I'm aware of (car now done 162k).

One word of advice though, if your going to do it, get the gearbox remapped too, as it gets lazy to change up on the standard map setting after the map.

I'd say go ahead!

What breaks on them? Where are the weak points?

Propshaft centre bearing is a weak point on the Cayenne and Touareg. They'll all go eventually but obviously, more powerful variants give it a harder time.

Cost me £145 to have a new centre bearing fitted at 90k miles. It's now on 156k miles and running like a Swiss watch.

£145 is relatively peanuts...some things do break.

Fragile? Absolutely not. Expensive to fix? Absolutely yes.

Best car I've ever owned.

if you look a revo tune or APR they do 30 days free trial, so i would look at them. See if you like it and keep it.

Or get a custom tune and rolling road to suit your car. There are some specialized websites such as ecuedit who do custom remaps. Most remaps are generic ones sold on by distributors. Each car is slightly different and yours at 130k I would look more a slightly lower bhp remap than a full monty.

Thanks for the considered responses... I never realised I could get the box remapped. Makes sense.

Going to mull this over for a bit.
