White street lights v the old yellow ones
Discussion
I prefer the sodium lamps which are the orange colour, as they diffuse the light over a wider area, plus, they're not as bright which means when driving out of a town/village on to a unlit road, your eyes don't have to adjust as much as if you've just come out of an area which are lit up by the horrid LED lights.
The other thing I don't understand is why don't the new LED street lights have a curved mount the LEDs are fixed to, so they would have a wider spread of light, rather than a vertical column downwards.

Ahh the old 'perceived' fear of crime ? These are going up in our neck of the woods and they don't seem that bad.
I must remember to start locking the house and cars at night as i frequently forget and we are only 10 miles from Manchester and sometimes i fear we may be burgled

That brings me to another point with these.Where I live, a lot of older lighting columns have had LEDs "retro-fitted".
Those that had long brackets overhanging the road have either had the brackets shortened to a couple of feet, or in some cases the bracket has been removed completely and the LED fitted to the top of the column (as they tend to do with new columns).
What I'd like to know is, is this just a purely cosmetic exercise, in that someone thinks shorter brackets look better (they don't!), or is it for technical reasons, such as the spread of the light being different.

From what I've seen the new lights appear to give out less light but that is because it's concentrated on the pavement/road rather than being an orange glow all over the place.
This. There is a street near me that has had a section of the road with the new lights, when you first pull into the street it looks like a lot of the street lights are out as there are still old style ones further down which scatter light everywhere, but the new ones are lighting the pavement directly below them.

The LEDs may point down, but there is a lens refractor over each LED to provide the desired light spread.zarjaz1991 said:

Generally perceived to appear less obtrusive without brackets, but the LED tend to be rather heavier due to heat sinks. How structurally sound those columns and brackets are is a consideration.Where I live, a lot of older lighting columns have had LEDs "retro-fitted".

They have replaced a few hundred metres of a road my house looks out on in the distance, the difference between the two types is very noticeable. The new white ones point down onto the road/pavement the old orange ones point onto the road, pavement, sky, space, everywhere.
I think they are great for knocking back light pollution, this was probably in the brief when the new lights were being developed.
As for the light on the road, it's fine really. Not a hindrance in any way.
The light quality would be very dependant on the installation, which would be dependent on the local cash probably!

It's cheaper to use the new led lamps coucils have to save money these days
On average, 30% of the light from a streetlight shines upwards and outwards. The light wasted by the UK's 9 million streetlights costs £110 million a year in electricity bills

Two questions for you...
1. How do you cope in the daytime?
2. What if whatever's just round the corner isn't a car with headlights on?
Thats simple,1. How do you cope in the daytime?
2. What if whatever's just round the corner isn't a car with headlights on?
1. I'm more careful in the daytime.
2. I'll crash into it if its on my side of the road.
Only joking, they are valid points, It's just the change in the automatics of driving that annoys me.
Now the security aspect has been raised, I've noticed this much more down my road, shadows and dark places for nasty people to hide. Lets see what we think in 6 months
At first I didn't like them for the reasons stated in the OP (unable to distinguish between the light of a car approaching and the light of the LED's) but I'm used to it now and just use extra caution.
I should be happy they are being widely adopted though as our factory has the contract to make a certain model of them.

You'd st yourself out here. I think there might be a streetlight about five miles away. Not sure what type it is, though. Now the security aspect has been raised, I've noticed this much more down my road, shadows and dark places for nasty people to hide. Lets see what we think in 6 months
