Holy fk is this thread still going on?

Buy a Honda Accord or toyota avensis petrol estate for 2k, spend 500 quid refreshing bits that'll make it drive like a newer car, bank the rest, job jobbed. I had the 2.4 vtec accord estate and it was quick, reasonably economical, had all the toys I wanted (executive trim) and in 6 years of ownership it cost me tyres, servicing, brakes and fuel. That's it. They still look new enough.
Yep. I bought a Toyota Carina off Gumtree for £300 whilst waiting on insurance and if I'd have fixed the hole in the exhaust I'd have expected it to get me to the moon and back. Surprised nobody's mentioned a Merc W124 as per the barge thread. The estates seat 7 afaik.

The harsh reality is either compromise, stick with the Mondeo or get a better job.

And is it only me who's teeth are itching at the 'Mondy' tag? Cringe.

You sod! Seeing that every other car that's ever been made has been suggested already I thought I'd mention this myself in the interests of keeping this thread going for even longer. You've beaten me to it.

OP - joking aside, this is a very good suggestion. I've got an Accord Tourer myself and they are very capable cars - you won't need to spend anywhere near £6k to get a good one, half that should do it, which will leave you with a decent size breakdown fund that you won't need because it's a Honda and is more reliable than death.

Good news. MOT cost £85 all in. Rear anti roll bar links replaced. Advisory on tyres and front wishbones. Gives me time to plan for what i really want to do now.

If you like the Ford stick with what you know. My ST220 returns 31mpg without trying too hard on my 60 mile commute, carries 4 adults (proper grown ups, not the legless ones car makers seem to think sit in the back of cars) and luggage, makes the most fantastic noise, and now I've fixed everything it'll need nothing but regular servicing.

It's also for sale, PM me if interested

1999 Lexus LS400, heaven. Had it for 3 years, cost £1900, spent a few hundred on tyres and suspension.
2003 Forester 2.0XT auto. Owned since 2008, bullet-proof, I'll keep it until it goes bang. Cost £5300 back then.

as i said i'm a postie so nothing exotic:

citroen c5's - good mpg and super comfy

saab 9-5 - not bad but i got bored of it and changed it for one of the citroens

subaru legacy gtb - awesome , jap, import but it had to run super unleaded and i had a work van so sold it, still regret it.

jeep grand cherokee - really comfy barge however the mpg made my twin turbo subaru look frugal and it got sold

clio cup 172 - impulse buy, fun little go kart, spent more on it than i should have (cambelt, dephaser, exhaust, clutch) really good on fuel however mot time next month so stay tuned

mazda bongo - jap import camper van, owned it for 12 years , super reliable but getting to the age where money needs to spent on rust repairs and underseling.

I buy cheap so i'm not tied into a money pit, that way once it gets to much on repairs it goes (or i just get bored of them)

I'd never borrow money to buy a used car whilst i still have a mortgage.

Good news on your MOT.

Running a Gen IV Subaru Legacy since 2006 - needed an all rounder family hack.
Don't care where I park it, or the bodywork these days now as an added bonus to it's age.

Took me 6 months to decide what I wanted back then laugh

Looking forward to when you do replace your motor, as this thread has entertained me.

Currently driving a 2011 XC90 D5 and a 2003 V70 D5. I like my Volvos!

Whenever reasonable I take the V70 to work because I can get about 50mpg out of it (unlike my wife). It's outlasted 2 Octavias, 1 Mondeo, 1 BMW motorbike and a Seat Alhambra, although it's thrown a few scary bills in the last couple of years. However I don't complain about taking the XC90 which we've owned for about a year - it's a bit of a barge and a bit noisy at times, but the auto gearbox and adequately powerful engine make for a fairly relaxing drive. Unfortunately the XC90 returns around 31mpg in the real world.

He blew the XC90 out about 30 pages back. Do try and keep up.
