RE: RenaultSport Megane 275 Cup-S
Discussion
Snobbery:
Just for the record I own a R26.R so I am biased but like most people the Renault badge put me off so much that it took me years to get my head around the R26.R being as good as described. The car is awesome and im kicking myself i didnt buy one years before I did.
Golf R:
A trip to the ring in May saw the new style Megane absolutely whipping most cars on the track and that includes the Golf R. The golf is a nice looking car but thats mainly from the meganes rear view mirror.
This new model:
Its the cheapest of the top hot hatches and evo just crowned it the best of them so the only question unanswered is would the full fat cup with ohilns and the Akra be quicker than the Trophy-R with the ring pack? I guess if I had just paid £40k for that Trophy-R id be well hacked off today. But that group of people (nearly me) is only about 20.
Summary:
Want one but not will to have two meganes and not willing to give up the R26.R :-)

PH article says - "So the Ohlins Road & Track dampers, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2s and Akrapovic exhaust can be added. In fact, doing a little spec sheet maths reveals a Cup-S can be had with all of the above (don't forget the dampers require the 19-inch wheels) for £30,435
Why can't you have the 18" wheels?
I think that's a misunderstanding, the Renault press release says that the Pilot Sport Cup tyres require 19" wheels not the dampers. Why can't you have the 18" wheels?
I've been waiting on this since test driving the new Civic a couple of weeks ago... Massive price difference.

Um...no, it wouldn't. The R is about 100kg lighter and has the same hardware as a specced up 275 Cup. Not sure what you're getting at. This latest model is basically a 275 Trophy without the tasty bits as standard. The Trophy and Trophy-R are better specced as standard, so if anything, this new model falls below both in the pecking order.
Unless it is a company car/lease thing, why would anyone buy a Renault when you can get a very similar VW or Honda ?
You can argue till the coww come home about slight differences in the chassis or engines, but once you factor in build quality and reliability (arguably respectively, VW,Honda) the Renault is nowhere.

Your build quality perceptions are out of date. I have an RS265 and it feels very solid, build quality across all the main manufacturers has come a long way in the last few years. I also drove 3 higher mileage RS250 models (around 50k on the clock) before buying mine and tbh they didn't fell any different to mine with 12k on the clock. You can argue till the coww come home about slight differences in the chassis or engines, but once you factor in build quality and reliability (arguably respectively, VW,Honda) the Renault is nowhere.

RS cars built on a separate line? Apart from your comment about general quality rising, I've read that RS cars have always been better made. Anyone comment?998420 said:

So how comes my 250 has managed 85000 miles without fault then Mr reliability expert ? You can argue till the coww come home about slight differences in the chassis or engines, but once you factor in build quality and reliability (arguably respectively, VW,Honda) the Renault is nowhere.
Oh and the engine hasn't blown up yet or the dsg box failed oh sorry it hasn't got dsg lol armchair expert are you have you owned a mk3 megane renaultsport ? Fook it I'm gonna trade it in for a clapped out e36 Tds

RE Reliability, not owned the megane but the Twingo RS I had was a nightmare. Poor build quality and some fairly big bills on a 5 year old car (Water Pump, Spark Plug corrsion). The clio 200 RS wasn't as bad but I had that less than a year so probably not best to judge. I'm sure current and previous Megane owners can comment further...
Would like to hear from owners what the ride is like on the cup chassis? The Clio and Twingo eventually wore me down on longer journeys to the point I dreaded going on the motorway, great fun and seriously capable on the right roads though!
Tempted to try and get into a 250 and map it after the golf R..

.
Cup chassis is fine, the RS250 has a longer wheelbase which helps. Mine also has 19" alloys and its absolutely fine..

VW reliable ? You must be the last person here to think that. Slight differences ? It will take you a couple of miles to appreciate how resolved and neutral the Megane's chassis is. Or maybe it wouldn't actually. You can argue till the coww come home about slight differences in the chassis or engines, but once you factor in build quality and reliability (arguably respectively, VW,Honda) the Renault is nowhere.
