What I can't understand, and perhaps I say this as someone who has to pay for their own vehicle, is just because you can do something like this, why would you?

I literally don't get how anyone could, with any kind of brain between their head "reconcile" what is basically £40k worth of toys?

Personally I would say lunacy. What options did he "need" that badly?

Only ask as I have a Golf GT which is decent spec and I'd genuinely struggle to think what it doesn't have that I'd have wanted in an ideal world, other than maybe the uprated audio system (joys of buying pre-registered).
Same here.

08 Golf GT140.

Other than a little light chipping (which has been done) I am finding it hard to think of anything I would add to the spec. other than Bluetooth for the radio and leather. After that, if you put two otherwise identical cars before me with the only difference being that one had all of the above and cruise and the other no cruise I would likely buy the one with cruise thanks to the A12 now having been utterly fked up with the average speed cameras which are soooo relevant at 9pm on a Sunday night and 6am on a weekend morning.

£60k! I wouldn't pay £6k for such a dull turd
He'd be far far better off going for the £0.45/mile net net.

It's a lot of £ no question - not what the very vast majority would spend on one & it would be interesting to see what you can pick up that spec car in 3 years time.

How many options can there be? Mind boggles.
Black Edition, S line, then there's ultra too.

Seems like a fun game - use online configurators to achieve the biggest percentage increase on bottom spec price. That BMW might take some beating.

If you have the means, then wafting about in a barge with EVERY toy on the list, listening to your £6k B&O sound system and doing 60mpg for only £400 month sounds like quite a nice plan - all in something that isn't going to ps off your clients or staff too much either.
The last part of that is very important to consider for many people. yes
I do agree with this to an extent.

However, an A6 is considered to be at the upper end of the Audi model range.

My boss had the same thought. Get something dark, not very flash, diesel, then have weekend toys.

Then went and bought a fully equipped 640d Gran Coupe.

Yes, very good. But it's still £70k+ worth of car... If you don't want to piss of customers, buy a bloody 3 Series, or an A3 or whatever generic saloon/hatchback. Don't buy a god damn luxury saloon.

An Audi A3 Sportback 2.0tdi, quattro, S Tronic with all the bells and whistled came in at £44,625 OTR - feeble attempt by me, sadly.

Unbelievable! My dad has just bought a used Volvo V60, when it was new, it had pretty much every option ticked and still 'only' cost £42k. And the Volvo has 25hp more!

It isn't 'only £400 a month' though... that's just the employee tax bill (@40%) arising from the BIK and deducted from their net income. The company still has to bear the cost of buying or leasing the car, plus national insurance contributions on the BIK.

Justify it on CO2 grounds by all means, but it makes no sense whatsoever as an economic proposition.

Problem is a lot of companies now have a company car Co2 ceiling that can't be breached, regardless of seniority.

I think companies can get a tax break if they commit certain fleet emissions (or so I was told). So senior bods end up maxing the options on a 2.0tdi to use up their allowances. The 3.0 will not even be on the list.

At my firm those who like cars have all opted out. The youngsters though still love the lowest Co2 German company car with the baddest body kit and biggest wheels. But then the office is always more fun when the reps are in, bless their little cotton socks.
This is usually the reason.

There's a tax benefit to the company if it is under 130 (I think) and a lot of companies set this as a ceiling for this reason. Our UK business has done something similar and it does result in people ordering stuff like this, or plug in hybrid models which never actually get plugged in...

Jesus CHRIST. Go on then, what options did you pick? Oh, all of them!
That would be telling, but I'd be surprised if you could get it to cost more.
Missed custom paint colour!
Whats that? do they let you pick your shade from Ansel Adam's best works?

Honestly I've tried. I don't think there's anymore I can chuck at it. I've tried excluding packs and buying individually, but Audi are now in the habit of only offering some options in packs.
