Let's talk wipers. Halfords don't appear to stock the SL's wiper (I'm looking for the replacement holder and wiper not just the blade) - I take it the w124 one is not the same?

Apologies for picture whoring but I love the look of the r129 when clean and waxed... A pleasant way to start the weekend (oh err!)

Possibly a W201 part instead (i.e. smaller screen). But knowing Merc back then, it'll probably be a unique part made of unobtanium which cost eleventy trillion to develop,

I've ordered the Bosch wiper from eBay for £15. I find parts for the SL to be cheap - apart from the exhaust and I hear the roof.

My roof has been "slowing down" recently... I take it this is going to be expensive? I'm mentally ignoring this for now - it works eventually.

It started about a year ago. Popped in to Tesco, jumped back in the car only to find that nothing worked. Even the locking had to be done manually. You can imagine the sort of flap I was in. I got out the car, went over to the boot to see if the battery had disconnected and opened it up. Hey presto, all the lights came back on the moment I opened the lid. Only, it seemed to have broken the bootcatch and lock. It's an electric catch- I'm sure you all know what it's like. So now the boot will flap up and down when I drive over a particularly sharp bump.

Now here's the interesting bit. The boot seems to have turned itself into a fuse reset switch. Once in a blue moon (happened 6 times in a year), the car will refuse to wake up and for all intents and purposes, just be dead. Then I'll open the boot up and she'll get on with it again. Won't happen when the engine is running-I imagine the alternator just overrides any misbehaviour like that.

The logical answer would just be to fix the boot catch, but where's the fun in that.
99% certain to be the wiring that runs in the flexi bit between the body and the boot lid. The wires' insulation breaks down, then the copper fails too, in the meantime they can rub against each other, sometimes make contact, sometimes not. Causes all sorts of weird and wonderful electrical problems. Pull back the rubber cover, repair/replace as required. I find you can get a few inches of slack in the loom from inside the wing as so, once you've soldered/taped/bodged/etc, you can pull the whole lot along a bit so a new area of the wires becomes the flex point.... hopefully see you through another decade or so wink

My 190e narrowly avoided being sold at the end of last year by rearranging the rest of the fleet.

It's currently having a pretty intensive rebuild with the highly respected grease monkey in the village.

1. Head Gasket replaced. No signs of failure but wanted to get it done as 150k seems to be the favoured moment to go. Car now on 149,500!

2. Head skimmed.

3. Valves refaced.

4. Valve liners replaced.

5. New alternator.

6. New water pump.

7. New thermostat.

8. New battery.

9. 4x new tyres.

He's had it 3 weeks now, as it's being done between other jobs. Hope to pick it up this time next week.

Nearest guess to the final bill wins 4 wheel trims for a w202.

Only 40k miles and up for around 6k in old money. Thank you Lord for Jap imports.

Staggering.

Or y'know, you could have a C280 instead... wink
Oh my, that is lovely!

In what conditions are cars in the UAE generally?

I often fear due to some Videos in YouTube, they are used within an inch of their life.

And just how difficult is exporting a vehicle out of say, Dubai?

Somebody at work has been getting free copies of a magazine called "Auto Italia" and then giving them to me. The latest one did a guide to the Ferrari 308. I remember those fondling as one of my best school friend's Dad had two. I remember them brand new and how unbelievably fast they were at the time. I still think they look great.

Not that I could afford one now but thinking ahead that at some stage this latest "bubble" might burst, I had a good read of the article. Trouble is, I can't believe how slow the performance figures now seem? Even my 840Ci Sport is significantly faster... My Z4 3.0Si would leave one for dead!

So, they're too expensive to buy and maintain plus too slow for me.
Freudian slip perchance ?

I'm guessing that's a £1500 ish bill there.

Please keep the trims to yourself.

My understanding is that the head gaskets on the M102 engines fail for the following reasons other than the water pump:

Corrsion due to lack of coolant changes
Plastic thermostat housing failing (metal upgrade avaliable)
Heater valve leaking
General coolant hoses leaking

If you've gone to the expense of changing the head gasket I would change the above smile

Cars get it hard out here. No denying that. Our friends from the Arab world have a particular driving style, not too dissimilar to that of the late great Mr Macrae (I.e. when faced with imminent firey death, boot it). As a consequence, constant WOT, together with hard braking and invisible speed bumps, take their toll.

Having said that, these jap imports tend to arrive in country before our friends can get their grubby mits on them, so many are fresh off the boat, quite often privately imported.

Exporting, as I understand it, is pretty simple. No restrictions on what can leave, only what can come in. I intend to do just that when I get out of here; quite likely 500E - shaped.

I meant that model in general, agreed the wheels are ste.
I'd have thought that chav wheels aren't always a bad idea as you can sell them, replace with originals and sometimes make money.

I think it's just chav spray paint - they look like standard pre-facelift Avantgarde wheels to me.

How much would a body shop charge to remove this spoiler and make good - anyone have any idea?

That aside, I rather like.

Brilliant bearding thank you.
Next time I'm home I'll give that a go. Or at least look at it. The only problem is, if I fix stuff, I'll be inclined to keep it.

£1250 mates rates as it sounds like a hospital job.

This might be extremely optimistic, but I suspect if you paid full whack you'd need to remortgage.

Oooof, so do I.

That seems to be a top spec SE. plus all the options like memory seats, buffalo leather, auto air con and I'll bet it has electric rear seats too.

The M30 engine will outlast the car and provide quite sufficient go for that shark-nosed beauty. After recent welding on its coupe cousin I have recently enjoyed several barging episodes in my 1982 635CSi, just lovely inside nd out.

thats is lovely Oa, somewhat strange to be looking at C124s in a similar price bracket but practicality is key for me

Who would think that putting a spoiler like that on an XJS was a good idea? !
