Looks cheap whilst we're on a Volvo theme. T5 petrol from the 'right' era, two owners, good colour, nav and perhaps a few other toys:

And this - low pressure turbo, looks to have a reasonable amount of goodies (e.g. phone pack):

Just got mine back from new discs and pads and a replacement caliper so hoping to avoid temptation...

Looks decent and honest. A little over budget at 6, but good history and condition.

That's lovely.
Ideally, I'm looking for a black convertible V12, but this is jolly nice.

That's lovely. These are growing on me. I like the idea of a manual V12 (would it require a conversion?!).

Yup. It's possible, plausible and my thoughts too.

It'd be less silent and wafty, but the down side is that the fun quotient would take an instant hike, more access to the V12 soundtrack and, oddly, better fuel economy. :-D

As ever, the purists will complain that the numbers don't match, but if the car isn't for sale, it really doesn't matter, does it.

Wrong era from the road tax side of things - paying £500 a year on a car which you bought for sub-£2k looks bad value.

That does sound like a fabulous combination. Can't imagine it'd win you many friends at the original club, but who cares about that?

Big tax irritates me for all sorts of reasons, but not in terms of what you paid for the car. That V70 looks really good value.

The high VED may be a part of why they're unloved - hence the low cost of entry - so it may be a factor, but shouldn't deter a barge-hunter.

I know what you mean but when you can find cars just a couple of months older which are over £200 less a year to tax, it's a factor. The second car linked above isn't any pricier (OK, it's not a T5 but it has fewer miles) and it avoids the £500 VED.

Looks like a bargain to me. Wish I could get away with a non-estate car. What's wrong with him being American (speaking as one)?
Nothing wrong with Americans, I had American house-mates for a few years...just an easy target wink

On the other hand it could've been keyed front to back! You never know with these, which is what makes it such a gamble...
That's more likely than any chassis damage from my experience.
Our family business has been buying insurance write off Mercedes for over 20 years. Cat D cars are almost always just cosmetic damage.
Cat C can even range from some pretty minor stuff down to severe chassis and body damage.

Cat C can really be a gamble but Cat D wouldn't ever put me off personally.

It's an odd looking thing, really not helped by those horrendous wheels.

How are you supposed to sit still on such highly polished seats. I bet that makes cornering interesting smile
I really dislike the grille and those AMG wheels aren't my choice either. The seats are nicely shaped on the CLS, no chance of having a slip and slide mid corner.

I like both of those.

Funny line in the ad. "Mercedes themselves claim it to be the best model they've ever made." Oh no they don't, and they didn't when it was new either (because of the S-Class).

You can make a fair case that it actually is one of the best cars they've ever made, as you can for many other Mercs of the late '80s and early '90s, but "Mercedes themselves" invariably claim that every new model is better than the one before.

Manual too. I bet there aren't an awful lot of them about.

I personally want my barge to do the gear selections for me, but manual is probably reassuring in the context of dodgy autoboxes, and you get the cheaper tax.

The 'unused for a year' bit bothers me most of all about that one.

Has a good spec but some damage around the edges

As I've got to get a new car at the weekend as the current one has given up the ghost,

Car does look nice but 0a shouldn;t go yet as the auction has a week to run. I note the vendor is also simultaneously selling two other oldish Mercs, an R129 SL280 with a pano roof and a diesel CLK220.

I refuse to pay £4/500 road tax, I just couldn't bring myself to do it, any car with high VED will just have to simply stay out of my reach, regardless of it being a great deal (the car itself) or not.

OH MY GOD!

I cannot buy another car though, particularly not another 300E in green which needs paint frown
