The wheels on this LPGd E31 make me want to cry, and the two-tone interior is a dry-retch disaster, complemented with a disco head-unit and absent OBD pixels. It's also in a housing estate and has an Alpina badge.
All that said the body looks in decent nick, it's one of the very earliest 840s and currently stands at £2000 with a day to go.

Seller is a bit confused, here's one of his terms to bid, "Please please bid unless you are serious"All that said the body looks in decent nick, it's one of the very earliest 840s and currently stands at £2000 with a day to go.

Correct, it's exactly £200 a year - this year. The gap will be wider next year. But £490 isn't the highest VED rate; and if you compare monthly direct debit payments, the difference is in fact over £200 a year.
Remind me again what your point was?
er, that it is only £200 per year. VED goes up with RPI now, so the difference next year will still be £200 in today's money.Remind me again what your point was?

Nice, especially at 10% of it's retail price!Colour and Exhaust upgrade are pluses for me, "cornering light error" will obviously need looking at though, and that 'M' badge will need to go straight in the bin!

This looks much better for similar to what the auction will probably finish at:

Cornering light "simple fix", looks like it needs a good clean in the pictures, nasty M badges. No ta.

Yes I have had my eye on that. Smoking is probably crankcase breathers or valve stem seals, latter is a big job I understand. This looks much better for similar to what the auction will probably finish at:

How did I miss that?! Maybe not such a bargain after all... If it was stem seals then it'd do it at startup as well as when sitting in traffic. If not then it could be very expensive indeed.
It's amazing how quickly the E60 and E63/4 has depreciated really. Compared to the Jag XK and XF which was a similar (ish) rival at the time, an E60 545/550 is easily had for 5-7k, the cheapest SV8 XF is 10+. Same story with the XK, even the cheapest 2nd-gen XK8 with the 4.2 is 10k.

Think i'll pass on that one .
Truly a smoker barge then...
How about this to counter it?

I know the S-type is a much-lamented styling exercise, but I quite like it in a dark colour scheme, and 400hp always soothes a sore eye.

Pics below are from the ad. I'm going load the family into it and drive it up to Yorkshire now for the weekend so in a hurry... Impressions when I get back I suppose!
Congratulations! Glad you found one, and look forward to hearing the verdict.Pics below are from the ad. I'm going load the family into it and drive it up to Yorkshire now for the weekend so in a hurry... Impressions when I get back I suppose!

I even like the styling. I had S Type Rs on the list when I was looking to buy a V8 (ended up with the R129 - I am a strange chap!). How about this to counter it?

Due to me being a thorn in the side of the DVLA, getting my local MP involved, and being very friendly with my surgeon it looks quite likely that within 1-2 weeks I could well be driving again!
I've just had a mate get some required service bits done on the E65 so it's all ready to go! Just had new engine oil and filter, new spark plugs, air filter and brake fluid. The cause of the minor oil leak has finally been found and is just a weeping rocker cover gasket and that's getting done on Tuesday. It's been advised my rear pads are low at 4mm....any idea how long that should last, based on mostly motorway driving (I know that's how long is a piece of string), but the OBC is saying 19k miles for rear brakes!!
That's the first bit of money spent on the car for a LONG time. Oil and spark plugs weren't due for around 4k miles but wanted to get it done before I can get behind the wheel again so I don't have t worry about it when I can drive....brake fluid was due in 2-3 weeks anyway.
Can't wait
I'll be back on here soon posting more about how it's costing me loads of money soon enough luckily, the friend doing the work is charging me £25/hour INCLUDING VAT for that work I've just mentioned

That's fantastic news Ross, I bet you can't wait!
One way of putting it! Sounds a bit soppy of me but I'm tempted to not tell my mum when I get my licence back and take up a trip up to hers on a Saturday as a surprise. Don't see her often (she lives around 90 miles away) but she was amazing when I was in hospital! Plus, it'd give the car a good run. I checked the last MOT certificate and since end of Feb this year it's done 2100 miles..... It's been to North Wales and back twice in that period over 2 weekends away (560 mile round trip) so in general use its done just 1k miles in around 7-8 months!
What are peoples thoughts on Mercedes CLS's?
They are a little over the 1-5 (I've been looking closer to 10) - How good are they? I would only be looking at the petrol engined variants, anything to look out for?
Also congratulations to Ross - it will be an amazing feeling when you get back behind the wheel.
