Question to the throng...

The car I bought was advertised on autotrader for £3950, I bought it a smidge less than that as is traditional. For some reason the vendor has kept the advert live, changed his phone number and the text reads 'sold' but he's dropped the price to £2200.

Why would he do that?
tax scam? how did you pay?
Could be because he has a similar car coming into stock at or near to the lower price or he could simply have made a mistake. Nothing to do with a tax scam! Most dealers pay for a fixed number of adverts on Auto Trader and pay a monthly fee, you pay for the spaces you don't use so if he is low on stock he may have just kept the ad running and changed the price to generate enquiries. It's not something I would do as it looks unprofessional and generates suspicion, rightly or wrongly.
I paid by internet bank transfer into his personal account. He's not a dealer, the car was his for 5 years, he was the registered owner and keeper and had his name related personal plate on it until recently.
Ah that explains it, some scumbag has basically copied and pasted the pics and description, uploaded a new advert at a lower price and hey presto, we have a scam advert!!

I'm not sure the mystery is solved... it doesn't appear to be a copy ad, it has the same url.

What's the 320 petrol like as an ownership proposition?

Bugger it..... Turns out changing the rocker cover gaskets on an E65 745i isn't an easy job.

About £100 each for the gaskets (!!!) and around 5 hours labour irked

Still..... That's the only outgoing this year for it in reality. Can't wait to get back behind the wheel again. All being well it could be this weekend. Car is at my specialist and will be finished tomorrow but due to work etc I wouldn't be able to collect Friday even if I can drive.
Why are those gaskets so expensive?
Your guess is as good as mine. I think he said £90 plus vat rather than £19 as that's what seems about right with the labour involved as well. You're right though, they're very expensive gaskets indeed! I will ask when I spean to them and let you know!
Doesn't look complex at all, that's a hilarious price! Bad luck, 5h labour is a kicker as well, presumably you have to remove a huge pile of gear in the engine bay to allow access... Pretty poor design really to have to do 5h labour even to inspect the camshafts.
Do you know how much better that makes me feel irkedhehe

Welcome back to the world of old barges Ross - a fine bill before you've even turned a wheel!

Looks great, wonder why the auction sale didn't go through.

That was posted a few weeks back, don't think it met its reserve.

The "running a bit rich" thing sneaked into the ad would need investigating.

This has been for sale for a while now.
Didn`t reach reserve.
I think we had it in the previous thread as well.
If i remember correctly there was a couple of negative comments.

The three pointed star in the steering wheel centre is upside down, enough to put anyone off surely?

I'd certainly be interested to know the story behind this changed ad - I spotted the ad last night while looking at prices on petrol S211s.

Does anyone have experience of S211 E350 petrol that replaced the E320? I'm viewing one shortly. It's pre-facelift (have not yet checked the VIN for 804/805/806 but the headlights imply prefacelift so SBC is on my mind) but the centre speaker cover is mesh which I believe implies updated electrics so I'm *reasonably* relaxed....

All opinions and experiences on the E350 petrol would be welcome! Thx, 12LEE.

I will call the vendor and get his take on the ad for curiosities sake, but not just yet. I'm waiting for him to post me the invoice for the most recent service and don't want to annoy him until he's done it.

Historically it's not been unknown for mercedes to make cars which span the facelifts aroudn the curover time. I've not heard of it on 211s before but certainly on 124s - for example a 320 which is a later m104 engine in a car with pre-facelifted body features.

Lots of manufacturers end up making a bunch of hybrid cars between facelifts while they use up the parts stock.

Completely different kettle of fish, but there are a few of Peugeots I've seen which are a real mix of electrical items from one generation into the next. They all work of course, and the differences aren't significant like SBC, but still interesting curios.
