Many thanks for the really helpful 190e window motor replies. To confirm, it is the driver's side, and when it's stuck down there is no noise - just nothing at all.
I'm collecting it tomorrow and I'll see what the garage says. Once I know for sure what I need, I'll follow your collective links.
Really appreciate all the advice, and I'll let you know how I get on.
It sounds like a very tired motor to me: if it barely has the strength to go down it won't be able to go up at all. But cleaning and lubricating the regulator and the channels the glass runs in will undoubtedly help. Those different motors seem to correspond to different manufacturers either of the motor or of the regulator or both. They look functionally identical. I am just a bit cautious because I know there are two different types of windscreen wiper motor and they are not interchangeable.I'm collecting it tomorrow and I'll see what the garage says. Once I know for sure what I need, I'll follow your collective links.
Really appreciate all the advice, and I'll let you know how I get on.

I'm sure euro car parts would stock a window motor too?
ETA - not cheap: http://www.starpartz.co.uk/products/mercedes-w126w...

More than £200 - blimey!
I think it needs the motor. The window moves really slowly, and if it's lowered all the way it won't come back up.
Might it be something else? I'll ask what they've diagnosed when I pick it up, but I was hoping to find something sensibly priced.
Gsf usually have an offer of 35% off every other weekend.
I assume it's the driver's side.
There are three versions. A0018209842, A0038200342 and A0038203742. I don't know the difference between them. V12 AMG might.
There are obvious differences in appearance and construction but I am not sure if there are differences in shape, size and functionality.
Plastic top A0018209842 is to fit the reitter regulator. This motor is interchangeable with the W126 as well. It is generally fitted to the early cars as a rule of thumb.
Metal top A0038200342 and A0038203742 are the same part and fit the much more common brose regulator. These are normally found in the facelift cars.
If you buy a complete motor and regulator then either will fit as the mounting points and electrical connectors are the same.
The top teeth don't wear badly like the W124 does. The regulator never really gets sticky and introduces friction at this point. The window glass runners can though.
The motors can become weak and work fine once they have no load on them. The actual motor half of the brose one is pretty much universal across a lot of different models, the top "gearbox" part is what differs between application. It's only 2 screws to swap this over.
The big breakers that will have them in stock will only supply motor & reg complete and not split them as a general rule. To buy second hand with warranty, you're looking at £40+vat for just the motor if you can source one or £60+vat for motor and reg.
Changing it is an easy job. Phillips screwdriver and 10mm socket are all that's needed.

That 2nd one does look nice. Wheels look a bit daft on the 1st car.
Having run a 745i with full history etc they are still very expensive cars to run. But when up to scratch they are truly fantastic barges. I suspect I'll be keeping mine a while if I can because it's cost me so much to run, it's now a good example and it probably wouldn't sell for any more than the other 2 listed!
May I ask what they are like to run? what sort of expenses did it throw up? I was considering buying a 745i but if they are money pits I may reconsider! Mini leftfield (and LHD) "barge" (okay I just like it!):
BMW E30 Alpina C2 2.7 LHD For Sale (1988) £5,695. I would have guessed it was much more expensive going on the E30 and other Alpina prices from this era.

A little late I know but one of the guys over on the alpina register went to view it and its not a C7, just a boggo E30 with cosmetic alpina bits BMW E30 Alpina C2 2.7 LHD For Sale (1988) £5,695. I would have guessed it was much more expensive going on the E30 and other Alpina prices from this era.

i don't know much about alpinas, but i know they are £££ so i would have thought the price would have told us that?
Sometimes there are bargains to be had if they've been hanging around on the market for a while, but yeah, that was very very cheap for a genuine car.I guess if the seller is claiming it to be the real deal you can't automatically assume it's a fake, always worth a look.
Jaguar XJR 4.0 V8, Full history, always garaged etc. £2,900.

Then I realised it was a 'private' sale and I knew it would be dodgy.
A shame because a real one would be ace.
Just sitting here doing some man maths re. something like this
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2003-MERCEDES-BENZ-S500-...
and an lpg kit (I have a 90 mile commute five days a week). Could I get away with telling the other half that it would be a more economical alternative to a diesel version? (crosses fingers)

He takes a good pic, but I reckon you could find something better for the money it'll end up at.

Between 2006-2011 We had a 2000 S500 with the 5 speed gearbox on lpg and it was almost as good on fuel as a 320cdi but a LOT more refined at low speeds.http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2003-MERCEDES-BENZ-S500-...

Both fuel prices fluctuated a lot during this time but from memory the price of lpg only ever got closer to the price of diesel. £ for £ these days i'm not sure where youy stand as haven't had another LPG car since.
This, being a facelift car has the 7 speed box and should in theory be a little bit better on fuel than the 5 speed car. Maybe it would be on par with the cdi?
At cruising speeds you'd never tell the difference between the diesel and the 500. It starts to become difficult to tell above 40mph that it's a diesel.

XJR looks nice, wrong colour scheme for my taste, but half thread budget with a haggle is very respectable.
A combo of your monitors and his colour adjustments on his photos.

Yes, I've had mine exactly a year. 100% reliable and you feel a million dollars every time you sit in the thing. I am considering having the supercharger upgrades to take it to warp factor 10
Warp factor 9 just isn't fast enough! Also came across this earlier, looks a nice example. 740i £2,995.
