Are you sure about the cruise control? I thought it was standard across the XJ range.
As for using it, I find that with the endless average speed check cameras littering the motorway network, cruise is essential to the relaxed waft experience.
Nope, even on the R it was an option. The dealers at the time said it wasn't even vaguely economical to retrofit, although they could be wrong of course. As for using it, I find that with the endless average speed check cameras littering the motorway network, cruise is essential to the relaxed waft experience.

Or the dealer could be wrong
That 1998 Red XJR definitely doesn't have it.
ETA: It also didn't have memory seats, rain sensing wipers or a heated windscreen. And that brochure also has the Asteroid wheels as standard fit, rather than the Penta which was on the earlier cars.

Insane value. If that exact drivetrain was in a slightly smaller shell it'd be worth at least 3 times as much...
Harry's car looks great. It drives great as well: I ran it round the block today, very tight and responsive. Only a one seater at the moment, though.
Cruise control and heated seats are musts for me. 50mph hour zones and all that. I'm a big fan of the speedtronic function on my r129: you can set an upper limit. Very useful in urban areas to set it at 30mph. Living in the north, heated seats are essential in winter. My 190 lacks them. For the time being.

One of my regular trips involves 300 miles from Edinburgh down to the Midlands (and back again) I generally take the a7 or a68 in preference to using the a1. They are A roads but do have reasonable corners. After that it's grim m1 50 mph roadworks.
The distance and motorway stretches dictate that some kind of barge is necessary.
I like the w124 on this type of trip. I hate new diesel rental cars such as mondeos, and I found my old a8 4.2 was both dull and out of its depth on the more twisty parts. I have not had a proper go in the SL yet.
What car in budget would I like most? I'm thinking something like a sorted e34 540? Part of me still wants an e28 528 manual though. It's not a trip I do everyday, so I do not need a car that completely isolates me from the distance.
Within thread budget and up your way(ish)The distance and motorway stretches dictate that some kind of barge is necessary.

A bit more chuckable than the A8 but 4wd for winter barging.

It is also good fun in the snow. The Recaro seats are ridiculously comfortable, worth looking out for.

Also, it's "quicker than a Ferrari" in the wet. Mainly because a Fesser's tolerance of standing water is poor, and they cost a lot more to repair should they twitch.
Love the red Jag. Someone who has one, tell me how good they are, just so I can feel sick and start obsessing about a V12 again.
Spotted this bargain below budget saloon. Very nice colours and half-decent specification. Looks like a bargain to me:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1990-MERCEDES-300E-24-AU...
Edit: the MOT history is a bit odd. Presumably a speedo change at some time. Plus one would hope that the work advised in 2013 has been done.

Liked the look of that until I saw the MOT history - you'd have to see invoices for all those springs and brake pipes before diving in I reckon. Doesn't exactly smack of a much-loved car.
To be honest, I'm not very worried about "slight corrosion" to the ferrules of the brake hoses or "slightly corroded" brake pipes or even "corroded" springs. It's a saloon, so for some reason unpopular. But even so, I think it looks under priced. I am tempted to add it to the red 190...
