Not a massive fan of the car I will say , but that interior !!

I actually think that is rather lovely in the usual Spartan vein. So much so that I feel obliged to put up some pictures. No wood! Not even fake carbon-fibre!

Can anybody suggest any competitors to the X350 Jaguar XJR/Super V8 as an obscenely quick barge in or around thread budget?

Having never owned one, I'm just curious as to what you guys love about these old mercedes that festoon this thread? Most of them aren't very quick, they're not the prettiest although that's subjective. What is it about them?!
The appeal isn't always obvious, and they're absolutely not for everyone. I can't speak for anyone else, but I like the engineering-led design touches, the anonymity/lack of 'look at me' (and these were comparatively expensive cars in their day), and the sense that everything is easily repairable. They were built to last, and built to a quality-level, not a price.

Today, they can be a rewarding drive. Slightly old-fashioned, but once you get used to them, you just get it. They have their downsides - we've discussed relative safety, some of the models rust in predictable places, and they show their age in some ways I guess, but I find them rewarding to own. I'm always struck by the excellent visibility and ergonomics, and they give an enduring sense of being able to do the same things for hundreds of thousands of miles.

But don't forget - they're all old cars nowadays. What you save in depreciation you might lose in maintenance. It's easy to be sentimental and over-eulogise, and lots of folk can't stand them, but I very much prefer them to an anonymous euro-box despite the drawbacks.

John McCracken was burned so badly with it that he has disappeared from these pages.
What exactly happened with Johns Mercedes?
It conked out a mile from the vendor's house and wouldn't go. We thought it might have been the distributor cap but it was either the fuel pump or the fuel pump relay. I think the vendor gave him his money back but I don't know. The vendor still has the car.
Have we lost John for good, or is he licking his wounds prior to a triumphant barge-ist return? Seems a shame to lose one of our (probably ever-dwindling) number.

I know that no-one else has commented on this, but I have been looking at these over the last couple of days, as an alternative to a FFRR. The only annoyance is the 20mpg as a derv - is Perth anywhere near you?
Not sure I'd touch that one - the interior is looking pretty tired now, there's quite a big rip in the rear seats as well as the steering wheel looking rather ruined. Great tow car though, if you need one.

I needed a winter shed. £1k gets me this. No warning lights, new tyres, no noises from the suspension, new brakes.... Very happy!

The long return trip from a barge-hunting expedition is an important part of the bonding and fault-finding process. I usually spend it in dread of imminent automotive failure and/or financial melt-down.
Well summed-up. I knew after the first 2 hour trip in my C140 that it was essentially a decent car.

Don1, I don't know much about Audis but that looks like an excellent buy at £1,000

Depends on what sort of era, you could go older Audi S8, or BMW E65 760Li, Mercedes E500, just a few options. Perhaps a BMW 750i (E65) may be within reach.

Ps you should copy his ad and pictures, it's an interesting read that will disappear after a while.
I'll write my own, equally thorough and long example and take more detailed pictures when the time comes. It's the only bit of selling cars that I enjoy...

A few pics of my £900 W124 as found earlier in this thread

Got it back to my mates garage and got a fresh MOT. It had 6 months on it, but more of a peace of mind thing. The brake bias was off and the parking brake wasn't working so they were stripped and sorted. It was running a little rough at first so the injectors were cleaned and its running sweet. It has a very slight diff leak but I'm just going to keep an eye on it. Had a quick service as well.

Its got good history and only 91k so for £900 I think its a bit of a bargain. It drives very well, smooth and quiet.. impressed for the age. A few wee bonuses too. All tyres are matching Vredestein, the radio has a little hidden SD slot for Mp3's, the dim dash lights I was worried about just needed a dial turning! Also, I thought the cold central vents was a problem but turns out to be the way the system is designed. Interior is in perfect condition, even the mats are in great condition. Ive been doing little bits like cleaning the fuses, fitting the missing mudflap etc, but to be fair to the old girl its not needing much.

On the todo list so far:

Electric aerial not working - checked and its not attached to the chain so I'll get a new one
Aircon not cold - Suspect leak
Diff leak - to be monitored after some use

That's pretty much it apart from the usual cleaning items. I have to admit, I do like the old girl.

That's absolutely magnificent for £900, can't believe how much of a bargain it is.

That looks really, really nice. What a bargain. I can see that ending up being sold by one of the classic car sites for a vastly higher price.

When I got mine I wondered about the vents and the dimness of the dials as well!

I used to love this feature on old cars (if its the same thing you are describing!). You could have the screen/feet pumping out hot air, but still get fresh air to your face. So simple and so great.
