Thanks for the pointers on the 190 3.2 transplant. The idea quite appeals, though I do wonder what the merc manual box is like - anyone?

I might have a look into that ML55, its less than 10 miles from me, so definitely more appealing than a trek to Scotland to view a s/h car
The manuals get a bad press. Part of the problem is that the auto is so accomplished, and part of it is the tricky gate of the manual.

It takes a minute for me to adjust if I jump from my daily into my 190 - after that it's never an issue.

I like it. The taller gearing is appreciated on a run.

I am at a car switching spree atm, looking at a particular manual gearbox 1997 D2 Audi S8, anyone here got a proper A8/S8 beard?

Just a word of warning on the ML55 my mate had one and the fuel consumption was worse than my V12 BMW 750 I had at the time, he would get 12-14mpg on his corss town commute and maybe 20 on a run incorporating steady and spirited driving. Interesting cars and a cracking engine but not interesting enough to justify the MPG in my mind. I'd rather have a W210 E55 AMG.

Me three!

I worry an X5 of the same Vintage has a bit of a whiff about it, yet not the Merc M. Still, how does the thread rate in budget X5s, especially the V8?

This looks a lot better than most E430 estates I've seen (as far as one can tell from the rather unhelpful photos), and has certainly been well maintained by its current owner. I could even live with the wheels and the AMG badging. Currently £1,500.

We've had the odd X5, there was a great looking 4.6 a while ago. I would consider that ML if I didn't already have a big SUV

So in other words, pretty much exactly what you expect to get from a V8 SUV? wink

I wouldn't say that's poor fuel consumption

The wood inserts look ghastly though, and I usually love wood in a car. Mixed with the various plastics on the dashboard, it looks like a 90's Ikea product, before they really nailed their design.

That exact combination I remember being hailed by several writers as the best car interior in the world. I think it still looks great

Very nice. If it was LPG'd it would be on my drive now.

Just bought a 2003 BMW 320i Touring unseen.

He told me over the phone it was silver and has a starting problem when cold - I wasn't really interested.

Then he told me it was a local car and same elderly owner for last 10 years.

When I asked how much, I almost fell off my chair.

£150!!

I'll see tomorrow afternoon how much of a state it is.

Could either be steal of the century or I'll be trying to get my money back in scrap next week.

Wouldn't claim beardage but I but I ran one for several years and loved it.

Mine was the later one with 360bhp and the standard semi-auto box with the funny gear change buttons on the steering wheel.

Sold it to a lovely young Lithuanian couple who wanted to take it on a Gum ball run smile
