Is it wrong to partly like the 190 because of its heritage? Something I find attractive is that it's a Mercedes from the era when Mercedes really was at its best for quality, innovation and a total cut above all other mainstream car makers.

R129: Are you bringing any of the fleet to either the Goodwood Sunday Service or the meet in December? If so what are you bringing? smile
I'm trying to get permission to come to the 29 Dec meet. It's a long way from Druridge. If I come by myself and if the weather is mild I'll probably come in the 129: you can save a lot of time in that car, from Newcastle I've been in Bristol city centre in under four hours and the far side of Exeter in under five. Otherwise it'll be the 124.

I think heritage is one of the many reasons to like the 190. It represents the zenith of the marque. Thoroughly modern, ground-breaking, even, yet built to a very old-fashioned quality standard.

I've manage to snap a spring on my w124, who would have been the oem manufacturer for them? Any recommendations on what site to try? Tempted to change out all four for oem as they are all aftermarket (kyb) items

I agree with all of that and tbh could have typed a lot of it word for word, as I am also wondering if I might be able to get to the 29 Dec meet. However, I am struggling with a moral decision: if I can get away from mince pie duties, which car to bring? The E39 530i Touring is the one which most accurately fits the spirit of the 1-5K Barge thread, also super comfy for a long distance X00 mile haul, but could also select the (too expensive for thread) 500SL, which may or may not by then have had its Saccos repainted and gingers reinstated, or then there's always the 944 Turbo which is not really that bargey, but might add a bit of variety to the day. Any votes?

Re the Spanish 500- has anyone got a pic of the c126 on the aftermarket 15" Mexican Hats?
Why does the Spanish car ad say it is on 17" 15 Hole Alloy Wheels? Those are surely not 17".

I'm in a similar quandary, I've not had my 107 out of my garage since it had a bit of sprucing up and it would be a nice run out. Seems a bit of a shame to rock up to MB World in a 211 estate just because it's a bit bargy. If the salt spreaders have been out though I don't suppose I'll be so conflicted.

My S211 has a massive dent in the side due to a DIY accident so I am slightly ashamed of it, but the R230 is neither a barge nor a smoker.

My E39 probably doesn't have a single panel on it which is entirely devoid or scratch or dent or DIY touch-up of variable quality, so I wouldn't worry about that if I were you.

(I know it makes no economic sense whatsoever but it's pencilled in for a full body resto probably 2017, having now been through it mechanically from front to back)

Lowtimer - as I see it, the Dec meet is a meeting of barge-ists rather than barges per se. My preferred sequence is SL, 944, e39.

Would be great if you folks that are a long way away could make it.

There seems to be a hell of a contrast between interior and exterior/mechanical condition on that car!

I agree with CDG about the barge meet both on the preference of vehicle and that its about meeting and the car choice is secondary, I say that particularly as I shall likely be in a new E Class diesel!

I'd love to see R129SL's car though as I've followed much of the work on it and E65 Ross' 745 is of interest as I may well be looking for a similar vehicle in the not too distant.

So what is the consensus on these? King Bork or have they got to the age where most major things have been fixed already? Any particular year I should be looking at? Looking at around £4K - don't do a huge amount of miles but quite fancy the 5.0!!

Nice colour, sensible wheels, big motor. But whilst it no doubt has its charms, it will be totally rubbish, right? Or wrong?

Worth £1500 on a good day.

I would only take a punt on a V8 if a recon/top-hat engine had been fitted. Otherwise you can easily do what I did with mine - spend a small fortune on general work and the engine suddenly self destructs shortly after.

Keep saying this please to stop me buying one! I found a beauty about a year ago - W plate green Vogue in cherished condition, reams of history, 2 owners and low miles. Wife loved it (P38s are the only cars she has an interest in) Got so close but decided against it when I discovered there was nothing you could do about the V8 in terms of preventative measures - similar to the bore issues on the non turbo V8 Cayenne. Too much of a gamble.

A year on I've got 3 P38s in my favourites that I'm keeping an eye on...

So I've bitten the bullet and put the big Beemer up for sale. It pains my heart to do it (especially after a couple of late-night journeys recently where it has been in its element). But I simply cannot justify owning a car at all right now, living so close to a tube and travelling so much for work.

I shall hope it goes to a loving home. And not to the scammer who emailed me about it a day after it hit the PH classifieds.

Thanks.

It'll likely be between an E65 or an LS 430.

They seem comparable, in your experience are they?
