The S124 could be a decent hack. I don't think I could live with rear silencers removed on the C140 however. MB spent millions trying to make them quiet cars and this modification is plain wrong IMO.
So this mod is not for you then

The video is worth a watch.
We've had that before! The car in the video is actually a w220 and the engine is the M137 from the 220. It sounds insanely good! I suspect it would grate on the first commute.

That spoils the front end of the car. Looks like it has a squint!

I'm with Tobinen - while car design is inherently a compromise for the average user, manufacturers spend millions on exhaust and spring design, and your average Joe with an angle grinder, welder and aftermarket lowering springs is not going to beat that! (I'll admit the V12 does sound good, but apart from waking the neighbours on a Sunday morning, it will have few useful applications!).

That's bonkers, isn't it? Sounds like a F1 car from when F1 cars made a noise.

2001 Coupe 84,255 miles Automatic 5.0L Petrol
Air con & heated and massaging seats, just been to body shop - nice and sharp looking now, new alloys, new rear straight through back boxes...., Sunroof Electric, Climate Control, Cruise Control, Parking Aid (Front), Seats Heated (Driver/Passenger), Alarm, Alloy Wheels (18in), Computer, Electric Windows (Front/Rear), In Car Entertainment (Radio/Cassette/CD Autochanger), Seats Electric (Memory Driver/Passenger). 4 seats, BLUE, What a car - the spec of these cars is amazing for their age, everything works perfectly and the drive of this car is absolutely faultless - I have had any marks repaired at the body shop, put on some later alloys: 275's rear and 235's front....(could do with a refurb to be critical), replaced the back boxes for some straight through stainless cans so you can hear the V8 burble, all in all an amazing car for the money., , Car has also had hydrolic suspension pipes replaced and auto selector box (common expensive problem) - car is definitely up together and wants nothing doing - ready to go and priced to sell - no silly offers please., £3,499
Something very tempting about these cars when you see one that seems in good nick and with a decent advert. I thought about one a few years back as well but figured I'd spend 30 minutes each morning and night manoeuvring it in and out of my very tight parking space. Not such a problem now and with low fuel prices, maybe a V8 makes sense too...

Have any threadees owned one or got any general comments? I understand the earlier ones can rust like mad and the hydraulic suspension (?) can be a pain.

I agree that the noise would get on your nerves after about half a mile.

A friend of mine runs a V8 S-type jag with a custom stainless exhaust which sounds awesome but is really annoying when cruising at 70.

You're right, of course. It's way out of line.

But 20 years ago £25k bought an ok E-Type, same car is now £60-80k.

This might be the best XJS for sale anywhere - what might it be worth in 20 years when most of the normal XJS trundling around today have been scrapped?

Is it more special than an Escort Cosworth, or an E30 M3, or an R109? I'd say it is.

As a 4.0, no, it isn't. That's not to say the 4.0 isn't the one you really ought to have for sense and practicality - a 4.0 manual is probably the one I would personally put on the drive if I were buying an XJS. The 4.0 is a *better* car in many ways than a V12, but a V12 will always be the *special* car.

And yes, I know that's perversely the opposite of the E-Type, but the E was originally defined and intended as a 6-cylinder car, and the XJS was originally defined and intended as a V12.

Obviously your neighbours would eventually petrol-bomb you, and rightly. But what a sound. What a sound.

Quite Fancy a Barge myself, Preferably an E38 7-er.
I would like something with a trusted engine which draws me to the 728. But i also wouldn't mind owning my first V8 engined car.
I really want to know what i'm getting into before i take the plunge.
Do the 730, 735 or 740 have any major wallet-crippling flaws?
Which would be the most wallet friendly?
Do i stretch to a V8 or keep things relatively simple with the m52 or M54 728's
I drive a 323Ci that hasn't had any major issues in the 2 years i've owned it.
Been a real pleasure to drive and it was bought for just under a grand.

It is the 'Insignia' version - they're rare and highly sought after.

As an Insignia, even as a 4 litre it will always be more desirable to buyers than a standard V12 XJ-S - though of course a V12 Insignia will be most sought after of all.

I think the manual pre HE V12 is the most desirable, followed by the 6.0 XJRS/last 6.0 V12.

If you do a bit of googling you will see that these have come up fairly often on this thread. Although the suspension can be problematic it's usually a case of bolting a new bit on. I'd be personally more concerned about rust. As far as I can see they were galvanised from 2003 so perhaps the rusty examples were all before that - you would hope so.

Does not look 'that' terrible and is cheap for a late car.
That's my old car!

Were I back in the UK, it would be on my driveway/carspace so quick.

The exhaust would be dumped by the side of the road. I loved that car (bought from a fellow PH'er on here)

Can some bargista give it the home it deserves!
