Check that.

Big miles, Big previous owners. Unsure the leather matches the car.

Otherwise, noice.
Vomit inducing colour combination.
Comedy exhaust.

I'd rather spend a weekend standing on the village green with my pants on my head than be seen in that.

Probably the rose tints, but it's surely the most complete car ever made? The 640d is amazing, but it doesn't make me smile like the E38 used to. Unless that's just an age thing, it felt pretty cool smoking around in a 740i at 25. I also really miss the tiptronic gear lever, it was such a good hand rest!
Maybe I'm biased but having had an E38 for a couple of years and an E65 I fail to see how the E38 is a more complete car (perhaps the looks department aside). The E65 is more comfortable, quieter, has a better range of engines, a better gearbox and it's more chuckable into the twisties as well thanks to dynamic drive. the interior is also better laid out (no, really) and is an even nicer place to spend time. I think the interior of the E38 can appear more welcoming at first glance on Internet photos, but in person the E65 really did move things on.

I wonder what an F01 is like in comparison still.

I don't want to be rude about an E65, so I'll just say that the E38 looks fantastic, which is the final part of the package in my eyes.

If you had an E38 728 and then moved onto a 745 E65, you will have moved into another league in terms of engine and handling package. Yes, they are barges, but an E38 728 and 740 are different beasts, dynamically. I have driven both, extensively, so feel like I am qualified to say that.

They're both good cars, but I'd have an E38 over an E65 all day long.

As you say, would love to know how an F01 shapes up against them.

Exactly. With that mileage requirement, expected MPG and budget I would be actively avoiding barges.
The S60 2.0T from yesterday would be an option.

Not sure on the history on that one...

There's a 40k/5 Year hole in Service history based on the stamps. One assumes this is the period when it changed hands lots because 5 stamps from around Warwick proceed this gap.

DIY servicing would explain the gap away if it was a relatively low owner car, but at this number of mileage and previous owners I'd tread carefully.

Not in relation to BorniteIdentity's request and I know it's already over this thread's budget but consider this...

1)Bargistas have been search (vainly as I recall) for a good W126 560 SEC?

2)LHD may put some people off but I have to say I never found it a problem...quite liked it actually. More importantly that is always going to ensure that the car is more valuable and appealing to a wider market should one subsequently wish to sell in the future. So, it's a far better investment than a RHD one.

3)The location (i.e. Orvieto, Umbria) is a little distance but I'm sure you can fit an awful lot of that well-known, local wine in the boot of an SEC to offset the cost of the trip.

And then look at the scenery!

And now look at the car!

Fair comments but the E38 740i is only better dynamically in the straight line department, it's more nose heavy than the 728i and doesn't have quite as nice steering feel. I can't see how the E38 is better than the E65 at being a nice barge aside from styling.

It is down to personal taste and preferences since any version of the 7 series is an impressive thing.

Personally, I prefer the E65. For me, the E38 lacks something (as does the E39). It is neither fish nor foul; it lacks the elegance of the E32, but nor does it have the striking modernity of the E65 - the Darth Vader appeal, if you like.

I have the same blind spot with the E39; they're bland to me. I know they are excellent; everybody says so. But to me the symbolise competence, not desirability and as much as I respect them, neither the E38 or E39 lingers in my imagination. There is no romance to them.

My brother tried the latest 7 Series when he sold his E65 a couple of years ago (he had been pleased with the E65 - especially with its reliability). He was disappointed with it - indeed, he preferred quite a few things about his E65.

He bought a Jaguar XJ SuperSport in the end which he has been pleased with. Incredibly, when he wanted to test drive an S Class only diesel cars were available - and none of the dealers were willing to find a petrol one for him to try.

I really don't think it has less character.... What do you mean by less user friendly? If you're referring to idrive, it's an absolute doddle smile I actually rarely need to use idrive to be honest, as per the E38, I control the radio etc via the steering wheel. There's very little day-to-day stuff which requires you to navigate through it.

It's no more complicated to use than the system on the E38 in my opinion (which used the knob to scroll through the menus)

Been away for a week and thought I would check the 190 when I got back. Despite 27 years, 201,000 miles and a week standing it started perfectly.

Checked the fluid levels before starting and they were good too, doesn't appear to be leaking either coolant or oil.

Was lovely sinking into the MbTex seats after sleeping on the airport floor for some of the morning!

I was all set on an E38 but the prices of the E65 aren't too far off.

I reckon the looks of the E65 are growing on me.

What is the bork factor on the E65? Running costs and Costs of things that go wrong?

According to several forums on the internet the N62 isn't one of the most reliable engines out there (But the internet is full moaners anyhow)

Ross, the internet also says the interior of the F01 is a step down from the E65 regarding sound insulation and comfort

I'd spoken to the vendor and was bidding - at the time we spoke I was the winning bidder - and it's been withdrawn, presumably because someone made an irresistible offer. Bloody irritating.

Oh well, may have to go and see the brown one next weekend!

Bad luck, that's a beautiful car. The brown one looks great mind, no reason to dwell.
