Been away for a week and thought I would check the 190 when I got back. Despite 27 years, 201,000 miles and a week standing it started perfectly.
Glad it's performing to standard. It really is a lovely old thing and I'm delighted you're pleased with it.

True enough, but the weekends are the only time I get to do this sort of stuff, and many garages don't open on Sundays so options and time are limited.

It happens a lot on eBay, you just have to make sure if it gets pulled its you that's driving it home
Sure, but why launch an auction and then pull it before the end?

After some research I have gone off the idea of a CL or S class Mercedes as my next barge, the costs involving the ABC and SBC systems are too scary and expensive and also seem like they are always when, not if.
How about a 2003/4 clk 500. These don't seem to be as complicated or as prone to bork. All I can really find is some issues with the seats and the windows on the early cars.
Anyone else had some experience or knowledge of these.
CL and S class don't have SBC.

SBC was fitted to R230 SL, W211 E class, W219 CLS, Maybach and SLR.

ABC is on the CL, the AMG S class and the V12 S class.
All other S class's have airmatic as standard. Which is much more reliable and significantly less costly to repair.

A clk500 will be a much cheaper car to run, but then again it is just a glorified C class and is 2 large steps down in refinement and experience from the CL.

I've run a 2003 CLK and a 2003 W220 S Class as daily drivers with similar mileage and against all odds, the S class has cost me a fraction of the CLK to run.

You've got to try and stack the odds in your favour but sometimes used cars are just luck of the draw.

Maybe I'm biased but having had an E38 for a couple of years and an E65 I fail to see how the E38 is a more complete car (perhaps the looks department aside). The E65 is more comfortable, quieter, has a better range of engines, a better gearbox and it's more chuckable into the twisties as well thanks to dynamic drive. the interior is also better laid out (no, really) and is an even nicer place to spend time. I think the interior of the E38 can appear more welcoming at first glance on Internet photos, but in person the E65 really did move things on.

I wonder what an F01 is like in comparison still.
I was all set on an E38 but the prices of the E65 aren't too far off.

I reckon the looks of the E65 are growing on me.

What is the bork factor on the E65? Running costs and Costs of things that go wrong?

According to several forums on the internet the N62 isn't one of the most reliable engines out there (But the internet is full moaners anyhow)

Ross, the internet also says the interior of the F01 is a step down from the E65 regarding sound insulation and comfort
The bork factor and running costs are definitely higher than with E38s, they're much more complicated cars. N62 engines have a habit of leaking oil and coolant.... The coolant issue used to be a massive fix (engine out), then it became a big fix (about £1k to sort) and now it's barely an issue (can be sorted for under £300).

They're really, really good barges but definitely more expensive than E38s which are pretty cheap to run, but check the fuel tank.... As this can be a 4 figure job to sort properly.

Its the very aim of an auction!

Quick sale, no end fees, no no-shows or morons turning up at the door.

I bought my last two barges this way. Not so good this time of year as viewing in the evening is out.

For completeness some R230s have ABC and SBC I think only the six cylinder cars don't have ABC.

Withdrawn from sale, 48 hours before the auction was supposed to end.

I'd spoken to the vendor and was bidding - at the time we spoke I was the winning bidder - and it's been withdrawn, presumably because someone made an irresistible offer. Bloody irritating.

Oh well, may have to go and see the brown one next weekend!
Bad luck, that's a beautiful car. The brown one looks great mind, no reason to dwell.
The fact that it hasn't been serviced in 8 years would concern me... For a start antifreeze changes need to be completed every two years typically to renew the anti corrosion inhibitors. Head gaskets and alloy heads can corrode quite intensively if not looked after properly.

Thanks, bad news about the roof. Bad day all round for thread R129s, the plastic windows cracked on mine today even though it was relatively warm. frown

That's a proper bummer. I didn't even think to check whether it was listed on the other sites.

Still. There's plenty of grim weather to get through before we're really in summer barge territory, so plenty of time

I really don't think it has less character.... What do you mean by less user friendly? If you're referring to idrive, it's an absolute doddle smile I actually rarely need to use idrive to be honest, as per the E38, I control the radio etc via the steering wheel. There's very little day-to-day stuff which requires you to navigate through it.

It's no more complicated to use than the system on the E38 in my opinion (which used the knob to scroll through the menus)
We're running an f11 at the minute. This version of idrive is very good, and is easier to use than the earlier efforts, hence my comment "user friendly"
In terms of character, the cabins of the e38+e39+e46 were the high point of BMW interior styling IMHO. They felt like real drivers cars before you even turned the key- the ultimate driving machine. I don't see their later interiors having that inherent sportiness.

Derin, I'm with you on the Lhd thing, and have been looking on mobile.de for one. Add to the sense of occasion I reckon. That 560 looks gorgeous.

Barge-tastic!

Collected the e39 540i touring today.

Took the train up (for free thanks to my Chiltern lines season ticket - so man maths demonstrates that owning a V8 is clearly cost effective)

Previous owner met me at the station having one last drive in it.

After handing over a crisp selection of mostly £20 notes, completing the documentation, taxing it online, and a cup of tea, I wafted back southwards back home.

I took it easy, particularly as despite swopping my insurance over it wasn't appearing on the MID - despite me being able to tax it online, which I thought checked insurance status.

lovely waft down the M40 - but also nice on some twisty-ish roads on the last few miles before home.

Having also collected my step-son from a not very nearby station I've enjoyed 150 relaxing miles today.

delighted!

My A124 is nearing completion so its re-arrival might distract me, but right now I'm in a stampy-foot I want one sort of mood.

I miss my old E38 whenever I see a Titan Silver with the 18" M-Parrallels frown

Probably the rose tints, but it's surely the most complete car ever made? The 640d is amazing, but it doesn't make me smile like the E38 used to. Unless that's just an age thing, it felt pretty cool smoking around in a 740i at 25. I also really miss the tiptronic gear lever, it was such a good hand rest!

I don't want to be rude about an E65, so I'll just say that the E38 looks fantastic, which is the final part of the package in my eyes.

If you had an E38 728 and then moved onto a 745 E65, you will have moved into another league in terms of engine and handling package. Yes, they are barges, but an E38 728 and 740 are different beasts, dynamically. I have driven both, extensively, so feel like I am qualified to say that.

They're both good cars, but I'd have an E38 over an E65 all day long.

As you say, would love to know how an F01 shapes up against them.
I fancy an F01 at some point, they just look so fracking awesome. They have so much presence.

An acquaintance of mine bought one of the facelifted from new, complete with laser headlights etc, and it's a very impressive machine. Diesel, but very impressive machine.

Imagine you are in a 70's US cop show / Naked Gun / Police squad, will need large moustache, shoulder holster and a shaved head or at least a full perm to really get into character. biggrin
