Imagine you are in a 70's US cop show / Naked Gun / Police squad, will need large moustache, shoulder holster and a shaved head or at least a full perm to really get into character.

Always wanted to reach out the window, slap one of those flashing lights onto the roof and proceed to drive like a maniac.

Big value. Not a car you buy because of its looks though is it?!E38 vs E65
Looks, E38.
Performance, E65.
Lower repair costs, E38 (even taking into account the achilles fuel tank)
Lesser bork factor, E38 (an E65 is so complicated as to make your eyes water)
Technology/gadgets, E65.
Comfort, dead heat (people can find subjective differences but objectively, neither is better than the other)
Ergonomics, dead heat (yes the E65 is more 'advanced' but the E38 is simpler and easier to use)
I think for an owner/maintainer an E38 is better 9 times out of 10, but for someone who can afford a garage to do the work perhaps an E65 is a good proposition. If technology and gadgets are high on your list then perhaps only an E66 760Li will do, also bringing the awesome performance that perhaps the V12 was lacking before then.

After some research I have gone off the idea of a CL or S class Mercedes as my next barge, the costs involving the ABC and SBC systems are too scary and expensive and also seem like they are always when, not if.
How about a 2003/4 clk 500. These don't seem to be as complicated or as prone to bork. All I can really find is some issues with the seats and the windows on the early cars.
Anyone else had some experience or knowledge of these.
CL and S class don't have SBC.
SBC was fitted to R230 SL, W211 E class, W219 CLS, Maybach and SLR.
ABC is on the CL, the AMG S class and the V12 S class.
All other S class's have airmatic as standard. Which is much more reliable and significantly less costly to repair.
A clk500 will be a much cheaper car to run, but then again it is just a glorified C class and is 2 large steps down in refinement and experience from the CL.
I've run a 2003 CLK and a 2003 W220 S Class as daily drivers with similar mileage and against all odds, the S class has cost me a fraction of the CLK to run.
You've got to try and stack the odds in your favour but sometimes used cars are just luck of the draw.
Thanks for that V12 AMG, very helpful. I meant ABC, got a bit mixed up with all the different acronyms!
I love the styling of the CL but all the stories that you read or hear about them is that they will cost you big time!
Would a later S500 with airmatic be a realistic proposition? I do expect to have to spend money on any car at some point but for a car that should be expected to do moon mileage they do seem to have a high bork factor.
I would be doing 15000 miles a year and would probably keep the car for 2/3 years.

Rather strange and unnecessary attraction to a lowered Hyundai Grandeur XG30... Someone talk me out of it! Alright not quite 1 large but definitely a barge....

Looking at a cheapish reliable barge to run alongside my fun warm hatch (bleeding ears on the motorway take away from the fun!) any suggestions at all chaps (nothing Swedish though, not my cup of tea since I bought another dog of a saab redently) The main criteria being comfortable and unlikely to leave me at the roadside!

I like it.
Not sure how comfy it would be though.

I always, always liked the E38 7 series.

Check that.
Big miles, Big previous owners. Unsure the leather matches the car.
Otherwise, noice.

There cannot be any way in hell that car left the factory like that (quad exhausts notwithstanding). Surely? Either that or Stevie Wonder himself signed the order form.

I'm going to play my Bannatyne card on that one.

Pretty accurate although for comfort the E65 is the better car, despite mine running 19s vs my E38 of 18s. The E65 is also a fair chunk quieter which makes longer driving more relaxed. Looks, E38.

You'd have to keep the roller blinds down now unless you can wrangle a digital tuner in there somewhere.I was behind an E65 this morning, and it's definitely revolution rather than evolution from the E39. It just looked massive and bloated, where as the '39 looks sharp, crisp and arrow like.
My budget will buy either, but it'd have to be an absolute no brainer to convince me into an E65 having read the comments on various forums.
I need to go and drive a couple now. Ideally, Old Colonel will come up with one - as he has nice stock and is very very local to me.

And the parking pole.
It's less than a set of tyres. Get it bought man.

A year or two ago there were lots of E38s (or so I thought) now I cant find any worth considering...

Another E38 just out of topic. Perhaps the value on the E38 has started to climb now?

The parking pole is strangely appealing! And the parking pole.

Things I like:
Maintained, including a precautionary gearbox fluid change
The weird looks & Never see them on the road
As you say, less than a set of tyres
Stupid and unecessary but I strangely just want it
Parking pole!!
Would make a cracking readers car thread
I would look hilarious in it
Things I dislike:
Lowered (possibly badly)
Wheels from a disco...
£900 could go towards something to cherish and be proud of instead of a bit of a laugh
Aftermarket HID kit (this really bugs me)
Terrible wood trim
I think I should try and leave this alone, as I can imagine some instant buyers remorse here, a very strange thing indeed and worth sharing with the thread though!
