If you have the time and means, then why not?
Therein lies the problem. As for the 4.2, while the absolute performance is not much better than the 3.2, in the real world it feels much stronger and you don't have to work it so hard. It is also the most economical car in the range!

Yes, I average 24 mpg in my daily commute and I've seen 28 mpg on a run to Cambridge and back. Town driving is pretty horrendous but I don't do much of that. Pretty good overall I think. As for the 4.2, while the absolute performance is not much better than the 3.2, in the real world it feels much stronger and you don't have to work it so hard. If you can get Purple past Mission Control then you'll have my utmost respect! I got a £44 old NAD Cassette deck through today without being noticed...but a purple E38 would be worthy of a Croix de Guerre!
I've managed to slip around the 'Darkside of the Moon' and whilst Houston was temporarily incommunicado, for a brief few hours, mysteriously found that another asteroid had been sucked into my orbit and has now landed on my surface today.
Inexplicably (and very suddenly), I now find myself staring up from the foot of yet another huge mountain-peak to climb!
What is wrong with me?
Nothing. That's lovely, and I dare say once you've had your cleansing way with it it'll be properly stunning.I've managed to slip around the 'Darkside of the Moon' and whilst Houston was temporarily incommunicado, for a brief few hours, mysteriously found that another asteroid had been sucked into my orbit and has now landed on my surface today.

Although it's got very low mileage(something like 58K) the car has been unused for 4 years and so is a completely unknown quantity that I had to have trailered directly to my mechanic's garage. It's a huge risk and even if I'm lucky (which generally I'm not!) at best it will require major decommissioning.
I'm already sitting with a parts list that's running to two sides of A4 just of stuff that I know that I'll need to renew.
It will also require paintwork if it is to become "MINT MINT MINT". Not because it's at all bad but because there's really no margin between "ok" and "show". The odd dink and scratch here and there etc etc that will not be amenable to detailing.
The colour is Ascot Green which is quite rare and one of my favourite colours on the E34. It's the same as the 525i my wife had a few years ago and if I can get this 540i looking as good as that one did I'll be very pleased:

However, the interior on this 540i is to die for! Even without doing any cleaning it is gorgeous and in absolutely perfect condition:

That looks fantastic, great find Derin. So are you going to keep it this time?
I haven't really thought that far Harry. In fact, I don't think I was "thinking" at all! I'm in the middle of a couple of weeks off from work, sitting around doing nothing except endlessly browsing the internet looking at cars and getting bored. Next thing I know I'd spotted this on Thursday morning, been up to Conwy to see it that afternoon, spoke to my friend about getting it transported on Friday morning at 7 am and within an hour he says: "They're picking it up within the next hour!" and by lunchtime it was already at my mechanic's place!
I hadn't even got my story straight yet for the impending return of SWMBO.

Derin - brilliant work! Good luck with the alibi.r129sl said:
There could never be any doubt chum; that's got you written all over it. The 'for free' bit always helps balance the books. The automotive equivalent of 'divide by zero', which seems to be the opposite of my experience which in general is 'multiply by two'.
Some fantastic thread action.

And the mileage is back to 53k, "double checked on a road test" whatever that means!
My interpretation from the previous ads is that the odometer reads 83,000+ and they've ascertained by driving it up the road that it's kms displayed. Regarding the free W140 do it and that, in the words of Forest Gump, is all I have to say about that.

Those photos are from the vendor and are a bit flattering.

Wow, Derin, that is a lovely looking car. Its existence even makes sense of the insanity of your disposal—last week, wasnt it?!—of the previous one. I'm really looking forward to seeing this turn out. 43k mile s500 for £3,990. With those little wheels it must ride supremely well. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...
Anyone feeling (p)lucky?

£2500. Seller looks a likeable chap judging by what I think I can see in the background too.

Slightly over budget, but a 6.0 w12 with 4 wheel drive and not too many miles is a rare thing indeed. I bet this is a nice place to cover big journies in grim weather. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...
