I think I'll look into that, would you recommend anyone in particular or I suppose more importantly who to avoid.
Tradex weren't great. DNA are good. Sorry I can't help more than that.
Thanks for the info.

Derin,

Love the 540i. Nice valentines weekend gift to yourself!

That does look nice, but no MOT, crap ad, and ripped seat leather.

This photo seems somewhat un-PC!

Slightly over budget, but a 6.0 w12 with 4 wheel drive and not too many miles is a rare thing indeed. I bet this is a nice place to cover big journies in grim weather. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

Good thing that's some distance from me otherwise the A8 might find itself on the market...

Can I ask where it was advertised? I never seem to see this sort of thing crop up!
It was on EBay but it only came on on Thursday morning and I got to North Wales by about lunchtime, made the gentleman an offer directly and bought it.

Excellent! Yes I should have perhaps read it better. I was seduced by the pictures!

Those photos are from the vendor and are a bit flattering.

Although it's got very low mileage(something like 58K) the car has been unused for 4 years and so is a completely unknown quantity that I had to have trailered directly to my mechanic's garage. It's a huge risk and even if I'm lucky (which generally I'm not!) at best it will require major decommissioning.

I'm already sitting with a parts list that's running to two sides of A4 just of stuff that I know that I'll need to renew.

It will also require paintwork if it is to become "MINT MINT MINT". Not because it's at all bad but because there's really no margin between "ok" and "show". The odd dink and scratch here and there etc etc that will not be amenable to detailing.

The colour is Ascot Green which is quite rare and one of my favourite colours on the E34. It's the same as the 525i my wife had a few years ago and if I can get this 540i looking as good as that one did I'll be very pleased:

http://www.bmwclassics.co.uk/gallery/index.php?spg...

However, the interior on this 540i is to die for! Even without doing any cleaning it is gorgeous and in absolutely perfect condition:

Wow, Derin, that is a lovely looking car. Its existence even makes sense of the insanity of your disposal—last week, wasnt it?!—of the previous one. I'm really looking forward to seeing this turn out. Now, those clear indicators... what's the plan there?
Yes, the previous one only went (sadly) last Saturday...but it went to a very good home.

I think with the best will in the World it's going to take a long time to get this one sorted.

The clear indicators are going! I've already bought a set of rear original lights that had just come up on EBay just a couple of minutes ago! Just about to buy some orange front ones as well now. The side ones commonality with E32s so shouldn't be too difficult to find either.

Derin's like a good animal sanctuary. He takes in old BMWs that are looking a little sad for themselves, loves them, lavishes them with attention, fixes them up, and then finds a new loving owner (after strict screening) to adopt them.

laugh keep this one for yourself once done Derin!

Not a completely convincing example of using the missus to sell the car, eh?

My ideal retro semi-barge is a BMW e28 528 manual. Like this one. Only 52k miles. Before you click the link guess the price! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1986-BMW-5-Series-E28-52...

Ouch! Derin pointed out in the retro thread that they are all rusty now anyway...

£1k over budget and I have no idea what a Bentley Turbo Apple is... but a short but sweet ad: http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C655762

39,870 miles. I have had the car 20 years. MOT FEB 2017. In good very condition. Black inside. In on garage with heating for 20 years. 01634246036

The house in the background looks rather pleasant.

That car has been for sale for so many, many...and even more many...years! I know of no other car that has been for sale longer than that car!

I was going to suggest the E23 on car and classic that has been for sale for ever with the cover over it and some comment about what an amazing engine it is for the money... but it seems not to be there any more.

I hadn't seen that E28 before, but then I consider any more than £5k for a car as criminal!

And I just noticed the price has increased! I'm sure it used to be sub£-10K...maybe even £8K once. It's been on there so long I can't remember.

It's definitely been for sale years longer than "MINT MINT MINT" brown E38.

Short ad which nevertheless somehow manages to inspire confidence. But by Christ, that car in that colour's a horrible look.

I've managed to slip around the 'Darkside of the Moon' and whilst Houston was temporarily incommunicado, for a brief few hours, mysteriously found that another asteroid had been sucked into my orbit and has now landed on my surface today.

Inexplicably (and very suddenly), I now find myself staring up from the foot of yet another huge mountain-peak to climb!

What is wrong with me?

Sorry, I'm a bit late to the party. Cracking looking motor there clap

I'd be interested to see your 'bork list'. I must say I'm quite partial to a nice E34, having owned three of the things m'self.

Is yours an SLS-quipped car? I can't recall if this was standard on the higher end models. If it is duly equipped then you've bagged a motor without the 'stting dog' aesthetic that seems to affect a lot of E34s, mine included.
