Nothing wrong with a bit of wood.

Almost within haggling of budget but this looks rather clean and nice to see one without the two-tone leather too. A chap locally has recently bought one and it seems to have a fruity, but not too loud, exhaust system. Most appealing.

That final picture with the light grain wood is much better than most, but..
My current e39 is cream with wood, it looks far nicer than the same combination in the e34, which has the right idea but looks like cheap Eastern European furniture.

I mean, I think of all Ford Granadas this was one of the better ones but for me it's still just a car that the 'Geezers' with Sovereign rings, Embassy Number 1 fags and sheep-skin coats that my late Dad used to do deals with down Brick Lane, when he used to take me there every Sunday morning in the late '70s used to drive?

I'm a massive fan of the W220 but nothing is less appealing than a 1999 car.

Neither car is likely to break down or need much in the way of parts but even when they do, the AMG tax is pretty minimal.

Quite nice!

The W140/220 and E38 seem to be quite the recurring theme here.

I wonder how the both compare when it comes to Ride Quality, Comfort as well as cost of ownership.

Also, why are used prices in the UK so much lower than other parts of continental Europe?

No, he was actually an economist (lecturer in those days) but being an African he loved a market and used to buy and sell (mainly buy actually...he was never a very good seller! laugh) the odd vintage watch.

Sounds like we used to get dragged around the same rounds on a Sunday morning? Heavy NF presence on the corner of Brick Lane and the cruel pet market at the other side of the market...it always seemed just one step away from open Bear Baiting! In those days I think even estate agents would have struggled to describe the area as anything other than "rough". laugh

Care to explain why please?

I know first model years have their quirks but my E46 is a first model year but has been quite reliable (Knock on wood)

The two, maybe three reasons, in my opinion, for this are:

  • Company car culture. Lots of people get a £30-60k car with their job who would never buy it personally. This helps fill the funnel at the top.
  • A combination of poseurs and car enthusiasm. Brits are more keen on their cars than most countries, and also more keen on competitively demonstrating wealth.
  • A dating number-plate system. This in combination with the above factors 'forces' people to buy new cars with a greater than 'natural' frequency.
These three factors make our car market unusually top-heavy with expensive new cars. There's then a glut at the bottom end with lots of big cars and comparatively few people who want to run one.

Whilst I'm O/T and on the subject of Fords, there seems to have been a real surge in Ford-Love of late. I'm thinking of cars from my youth and that I just don't get. Surely, 'Life on Mars' can't be solely responsible?

I mean, I think of all Ford Granadas this was one of the better ones but for me it's still just a car that the 'Geezers' with Sovereign rings, Embassy Number 1 fags and sheep-skin coats that my late Dad used to do deals with down Brick Lane, when he used to take me there every Sunday morning in the late '70s used to drive?

£8000...reserve still not met?

I share your puzzlement - I can almost understand the Granade coupe as they are very rare and were quite exotic (in the context of that age where you could go days without spotting a Merc or BMW (at least in 70s Birmingham, anyway!)) but the values paid for bog standard 1.3 Escorts and Cortnas is beyond me. I guess some people like to revisit their youth via the car their dad had, whereas I prefer to buy a car I could not have imagined running 20 years ago (I wasn't a youth 20 years ago, but the dynamic performance of, say, a 1973 250CE is a step too far!).

Capris too....?eek

I mean they were ok-ish...but £8500 for a 1.6 Laser with 112K miles on the clock? Really? Are they that sought after now?

I think a Capri is probably the most disappointing car I have ever driven when the degree of anticipation is contrasted with reality - there are far worse cars, but nothing had been as lusted over as a Capri by my then 21 year old self. I recall just wanting the test drive to be over.

For me it was a Golf GTI. It was 1990 and a Mk 2 car I think. I found it utterly under-whelming.

Does this fan the flames of the recent BMW-love?

http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C710095

I'm not keen on boy-racer addenda, but that car looks good to me for less than 4 grand.

MOT gap (on this number at least) from 12 to 15, but nothing scarey based on what's visible, and there's a new MOT offered by the vendor.
