Spoke to the seller today who seemed like a nice chap.
One or two rust bubbles on the front wings but not too bad.
I was concerned about the photo showing the bonnet not sitting properly but he assured me that the bonnet just wasn't closed fully.
He will email more photos tomorrow along with service history details.
Got the photos today.
Near side front wing is definitely a bit crusty where it meets the bumper but otherwise seems very good.
Nice colour combo.

That's the one. Good sleuthing. Not a petrol, unfortunately. I can see the drive from my home office window, and will park it so that I can see that plump rump out of the corner of my eye.

Sadly, three growing kids do not fit as well as I thought they might, and the missus won't drive it, rendering it somewhat superfluous to requirements.

Diesel notwithstanding, that E280 looks nice.

Were you trying to pitch it here which, obvs, you're not, but what would a prospective buyer wish to know do you think? I reckon a bit more detail on service history and work done would be good to know; how long the owner has had it; and perhaps a few words stating what's good, and possibly what might need attention if you were keeping it. You know, if one were to be interested.

This old thing could be a decent buy. A bit crinkly around the edges, but lots to like for less than two grand.

Very slightly over-budget, but it's purple and has 12 cylinders.

I can't be certain but I think I owned that very car.

Same colour inside and out as I had and there can't be many.

Don't want to cast aspersions but I traded it in for an alternative in 2009 and it'd done over 100,000 miles then so it seems it's had very little use in the last six years, perfectly possible and it may not be the one but it certainly appears to be in all respects.

Been looking at 6 series' today, 645i in black looks nice, under budget too, don't fancy the indicated 7mpg though!

Emailed you with some more info, rather than sully the thread with further non-qualifying vehicle bumpf.

Please keep posting. The 6 series gets better and better with age, in my opinion. The 45 engine won't be anything like that bad on fuel either!

Very exciting - I look forward to the results. I used to wash mine but don't dare now - there might not be any wheel arches left when I'm done.

This 280TE looks nice for £950: http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C666039#

"Finished In Metallic Charcoal with Grey Cloth , has covered 134k miles which is very low for this age and for one of these cars , MOT February 2016 , recent Exhaust sections , good tyres , there are some marks around the car but it is very presentable , interior is tidy without the usual wear to the Drivers Seat , Private Plate comes with the car , keenly priced , please call or email for details"

I hated the 6 series when it came out, thought it looked awful, but as I get older (and the big 40 approaches) I'm finding them more and more attractive, what are they like on fuel in the real world?

Mid-high twenties

Thirties on a run

The 50i a little better on fuel but not much in it. When you consider 335i MPG is about the same (a bit less but not much)!the V8 does look ok on fuel.

Quite economical compared to the MB E500 which was low twenties.

Wowsers!

Im guessing 'the man' is in NI?

I can't find anyone to do my spring perches. I've been recommended a couple of bodyshops but neither seem interested in the job, I even took it in for one of them to look at. I guess they figure its a lot of hard work and faff but they can't quote much on a 15 year old car.
